i have a 76 chevy luv with an auto tranny and after sitting for three years i finally have the registration again and will be on the road in a few days. after the basic fluid changes, filter changes, new plugs and wires... at least i hope so... but i went to the dmv got the registration and a one day moving pass to move it so i can get it ready for smog... well i drove it and it started like a champ after i poured a bit o gas in the carb. so off i went to fill it up and it kinda stalls a bit but understandable after three years but as i drive it doesnt want to get out of first... i let off and it shifts does the same thing at every light... just wondering if its controlled by a vacuum line?? or if you have a general idea of anything else it might be let me know. thanks

well i changed all the basics but that so far just cause the simple fact im out of money out of a job and really have nothing to get under there... i took a leaf spring out and cranked the torsion bars down when i was in highschool. want to put it up higher again to stock now that im really out of the teeth jarring stage of adolescence and trying to have a low rider lol as soon as i find a place to get under there... even the oil change today was really hard haha i will and i will let you know how it goes thanks

Hello,
The auto tranny has a shift cable that goes from the carb to the valve body inside the transmission. The cable does 2 things. 1st it provides the proper main line pressure inside the transmission with throttle changes. 2nd it makes the tranny shift at different throttle positions/loads and it will put the tranny in 2nd gear at wide open throttle so you can pass somebody on the road. If that cable isn't working/adjusted properly the tranny won't shift. You can check it by removing from the carb and pulling on the cable. If you feel resistance then the cable isn't broken. You can adjust the cable be moving the throttle level to wide open(with engine off!!!) and squeezing the square piece on the cable. This will allow the cable to extend/adjust to the throttle lever rotation and hopefully get it shifting with the correct engine rpms. Go ahead and change the fluid first and check to see if the cable is rotating the lever inside the tranny. You will be able to see it with the tranny pan removed. Then try this idea. Let us know if this works out for you. Hope this helps.
mike.
