I have been working on my 79 and can't get it to have the right fuel-to-air mixture. I can hear air rushing somewhere near the carburetor and it sounds like it's coming from the firewall behind the carb somewhere. Like the sound is bouncing off the firewall. Because it's so loud at the firewall, I can't pinpoint the actual source. Thought it was a loose air cleaner, but I took the air cleaner off and it's the same. If I cover the air intake with my hand, it idles up, and after about 5 seconds starts to sputter. So air is getting in somewhere between the carb and the engine. Hence my limited ability to adjust the mixture. I sprayed carb cleaner around between the engine head cover and the carb mounting, and no matter where I spray it, the engine revs up. Where should I expect a leak to be in that area? Beside the gasket the carb sits on, are there any other spots to check?

Ok, it's the intake manifold gasket. Tons of air leaking in along the whole thing. I can pretty much block the whole air cleaner intake and it still runs. The gaskets were replaced just before I bought the truck a couple weeks ago, but they obviously didn't do this one right. Maybe the bolts aren't tight enough? Does the metal need to be ground before replacing? Anything I should know or try before messing with it or replacing? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

My guess, when they were replaced, the old gasket wasn't fully removed from the sealing surface, causing the problem. I'd see if I could get just that gasket from AutoZone or your own personal prefferance for parts store, and just replace it, making sure to get all of the old gasket material off before installing the new one.

i know i had problems getting the steel line going around the engine from the egr manifold off because it was like welded on from electrolysis so i wound up heating it up so much it cracked and had to get a new one lol took forever to find one and the new pipe. but when i found one i had to scrap the shit out of it with a knife then i used a wire brush to get it clean... no more problems from it lol
