I've got a 75 2wd and a 79 4wd. The 79' has 4.11's and the 75' has 4.56's i want the 4.56's in my 4x. Is it as easy as swaping rearends? I checked the ujoints and springs and they all come up the same part #'s. Thanks for the help.

it aint difficult just time consuming the problem i would see with that is after you switch axles you would have to switch the gears in the front also so you would have a matched set so it doesn't cause conflict with each other.
had that happen in a truck i bought, front and rear weren't matched so it felt like the rearend was trying to run over the front, i.e. the rear was turning faster than the front and pushing it

Yea I knew that would be a problem. If you lock the front end in like that it makes driveshafts and ujoints cuss as they bounce off of the pavement. I was gonna buy the gears for the front if I can find them, just thought If I could get away with it in the rear it would be that much cheaper.

if you measure the spring perches on the axle and make sure they are the same width it should work

I would think you could just change the rear third member, not the entire axle assembly, should both be 10-bolt, 17-spline. As for the front you need the front third member from an '87 or older Trooper, all but the '87 turbo diesel came with 8-bolt 26-spline 4.56 (TD were 4.10). The bad part is you have to remove the entire front end to get the third member out. Then to correct the speedo you will need to either change the speedo gear or put on taller tires.
