 Post subject: ignition

k. I turn the key all the way to the right to start it but it only cranks. but once I let go of it, the truck starts. what's causing this?

It could also be the coil resistor bypass relay circuit. When you turn the key to start it bypasses the resistor giving the coil full 12 volts instead of going through the resistor. Take a look at the wiring diagram on the main luvtruck.com site and check the wiring to the bypass resistor and coil. It could be as simple as the wire to the coil not being hooked up or the relay could be bad. The coil should have the wire from the resistor and one wired straight to it on the + side.

800xl took the words right out of my mouth. I don't know why Isuzu had to make this circuit so complicated. They could have just added another terminal to the starter solenoid to accomplish the same thing, much simpler. American manufactures did this in those years.

The purpose of the ballast resistor circuit is to apply full battery voltage to coil while cranking, then slightly reduced current during running to save the coil from heat soak damage.
