Sounds like it might be a loose plug or wire connection. Start there 1st.

correct me if im wrong but the high beam switch is on the floor{dont use highbeams alot} and i have changed out many many of those because water runs right down on them if you have any kind of leak, they are usually just a couple dollars but that has been the cause of loosing headlights for me in the past

There is a thermal circuit breaker for the headlights under the dash on 78-80 trucks that can trip and reset itself. Sounds like that is a likely suspect since you've got something else wired in with the headlamps. If you have the fog lamps on a relay, you might go ahead and covert the headlights to run off a relay directly to the battery too. Eliminating the switch and all that extra wiring before the lamps would take load off the circuit breaker and the headlights will shine brighter anyway.

On 77 and older there is a single fuse, headlight switch, that can blow or get flakey and take out all the lights at once.

Thanks, 800XL! Some wild roads here and REALLY don't need to do the shot in the dark thing, really...

Hey, on those driving lights: almost sounds like they're wired wrong? Should have direct 12V battery voltage to one side of relay and to lights, and the other side is the control circuit, which would be wired to switch of choice. If you're tapping headlight wires for power to the driving lights that ain't gonna get it! Same goes for using relays on the headlights, direct battery voltage to one 'side' of relay, other side is control circuit.

That fuse almost killed me once when I was on a logging road doing about 50ish sideways around a corner spitting gravel and hit a bit of a pot hole. Every light went out and I was left getting the truck Whoa'd by feel with a steep drop on one side and a rocky cliff on the other. Once I got stopped I looked at the fuses and found nothing wrong. I popped that fuse out of the panel and the lights flickered, checked the fuse over good and one end fell off in my hand. Hmmm, mystery solved!
