I've got the mixture screw right where I want it but the idle doesn't drop below 1500 rpm and the valves at the top of the carb won't close and they stay open. If I screw the mixture screw in all the way it doesn't die and I thought it was supposed to. I've spent the past three days solid in the garage putting new exhaust headers, offy intake, and weber carb on and I'm close to shooting myself. The headers have a cheap coating on them so it's burning off and there's lots of smoke and it seems I always have a plethora of coolant leaks. I thought the screw at the top behind the electric choke was responsible but I don't know if it's supposed to be touching or what. My brain is dead. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks guys.

Sounds like the throttle cable is being held up and not letting the throttle to return to idle.

Did you put a low fuel pressure regulator in? They sell a holly at most places around $40. The idle screw should be brought in to touch and turned in 1-1/2 turns I believe. My weber idles high, but it think it is more a jetting issue on mine. My dad said when his LUV was brand new, it always idled fast. Do you have the timing set at factory or 12 - 13 deg? What do you have for vacuum lines hooked up? Did you take the EGR out? I only have the distributor vacuum advance and the PCV hooked up now. Took the egr off and welded it shut and eliminated all the smog stuff. Keep with it, it took me a couple of days to get my truck right, but it will be well worth it.

I agree that something is holding your throttle open. The mixture screw will have no effect unless the throttle is nearly closed and the idle speed is about 700-900 rpm.
