i didint see any where so.
did the LUV ever come with the 3.42 gears with the 4 speed trans or was this only a pup thing, with the N/A diesel.
they had MPG+ on the cab behind the door, just in case you run in to one, you can tell it just at a glance.
are all LUVs 3.73s or 4.11????
depending on 4+4 4+2 and manual, auto trans??? or are they all manual trans?

are there gears that the LUVs have, that the pup/trooper does not????

In '78 at least the manual trans came with 4.10's, the auto with 3.73. I used the speedo gear from an auto to partially correct for bigger tires.

well those are mostly the same as the pup

i see all LUVs and pups with auto, had 4.11 with auto trans.

the pups only came with the 3.42s with the diesel, where as its gas only in the LUVs, with 3.41s

there are no pups with 4.55 gears, only troopers, some 88 to 91 troopers had 4.77 gears.

looks like the same for all LUVs and pups that have 4x4, 4.11 gears or 4.55 gears with 4x4, though as i said no pups had 4.55 gears.

but for the 4.55 listing it does not say 4x2 or 4x4, does this mean there all 4.55 in the early years?

Prior to series 9 (1979) there was no 4x4 model so it is talking 2WD only.

On the 4x4 models the 4.56 gears from a 86 or older Trooper should be swappable to the LUV diff housing in the front. While there are a lot of options for the rear, stock front axles are limited to 4.10 (stock), 4.56 (Trooper transplant), or an axle swap.

i know that 87 was the last year for the 10 bolt rear 8 bolt front in the trooper. (not 86)
88 to 91 had the 12 rear 10 front bolt pattren.
i was hopeing for a LUV 4x4 modle with 3.73 front gears.
but i gess i just need to settel for 4.11s

87 was a strange year in Troopers. In 86 you can guarantee an 8 bolt front/10 bolt rear but in 87 they mixed parts throughout the year. I've seen 10 bolt front with a 10 bolt rear, and I've heard of some with 8 bolt front and 12 bolt rears. Few features are a given, very early model year 87s had round headlights like the 86s instead of squares like the 88-91s and then very late 87s might even have a FI 2.6L instead of a carb 2.3L motor. Basically when I talk trooper parts I tell people assume an 87 is like an 88 if you are looking for older parts and assume its an 86 if you are looking for newer parts. That is unless you really know what you are looking at on the specific part. Axles are probably the worst for being whatever they had on hand when they built it too.

There may be some other options from overseas sources. I know there was some sort of Isuzu van that could be found with a 10 bolt rear geared to 5.38 that we never saw in the US. I don't know of anything specifically with 8 bolt front gears other than 4.56 or 4.11 but its possible they made some small car at some point that used an 8 bolt diff as a rear or something like that.

would 4.56 gears in my LUV be better than the stock 3.77? i wanna little more pep in the take off and low end acceleration... and how hard are the gears to come bye, also is there a rear end with them in it that will match up to the rear u-joint housing (cant think of the name) to a 87 5-speed?

thanks
dustin

for more pep off the line but not giving up high speed 4.11s are a much better comprmize.
though youll still see mpg drop.
if you have a 4 speed and you put 4.55s in it your rpms at 60mph will be (very high).
if its a diesel it will be a bear to stay at just 55mph with a 4 speed and 4.55s

I have the 4x4 w/ 4.56's (I thought it was 456 and not 455) and my truck is screaming at 55 mph. It is gas.

4.56 gears are aren't too bad if you have a 5 spd and taller tires with the gas motor. They just about match up to a 235/75-15 tire size even on the stock LUV 4 Spd so the speedo reads correct.

I am going to get a 5 speed for my truck. Dunno about taller tires, but a 5 speed is in the future if I am going to keep this truck.

a 5 speed will help, with a gane of 250 to 350 rpms lower.

staying with the 4 speed and going to 3.73s will be better for MPG, but 1st gear will be taller.
1st gear will be like running 4.11s with bigger rubber, compared to 3.73s
3.73 and a 5 speed will do even better but only on a flat road. 5th will be worthles on steep hills
and you need a 4x2 LUV to do that.

theres no free lunch when it comes to gearing, to gane you gotta give up somthing.
one way or the other.

running a trans with drect high gear, with little tires, and ujusting engine RPMs buy putting in a ring and pinon that will give you the best power band RPMs for the best MPG.
thuogh this set up can make for a rather gutless rig with rather big gaps from gear to gear.
1st gear and reverse will be very tall.

but sence the 4x4 LUVs only had 4.11s, having a O/D and bigger tires is the next best thing.
unless you go custom.

if you go to 4.11s
the speed you are going at now in 4th gear, will be (about) what 5th gear will be with 4.11s
give it a try some time at 65 some odd mph, in 4th gear and see if you like it.

then you can up size your tire size but then thats defeting the purpus, of getting better 1st gear go off the line.

Here in Australia the only ratio option's were 5.125:1 4.555:1 and 4.11s there was also a LSD option
5.125s were found in the early LUV's 72-75
4.11s were found in gas LUV,s 76-80 (non 4wd)
4.555 were found in gas & diesel 4x4 LUV,s

I have parted out many Luvs, Pups and Troopers. I hav'nt been lucky enough to get a 4.11 centre chunk yet, 4.555 seems to be the most common ratio. There wasn't a auto trans option available in Aus either.
