The only realy trick is to not put bondo on bare metal. It attracts moisture and causes rust. It should be put on after a layer of paint or primer from what I've always been told.

I was told ( back in the 80's) that it should be put on bare metal to make sure it sticks well. But I also have seen lots of bondo being removed (or falling off) with rust under it. So maybe... Probably I was told wrong, way back when.

Bondo is best used to blend in the patch panels that are welded into the rusty areas of thesheetmetal that you cut out and replace. If it was rusty once...

My 2 cents, body filler goes on BARE metal, spot putty on primed metal, bondo (brand) best belongs in the garbage, if you are going to spend the time to fix something, do like my sig says and go to a place that sells autobody materials and get a better quality filler, like evercoat or feather rite. Spending a little more in the short term, pays bigger in the long run. Make sure you get ALL the rust off first, no matter how good the filler, it will always come back through if left.

Search the net or your Yellow Pages. There out there, it's the places that the body shops get their supplies from.

Bondo is made with a talc type product. What does that mean. It will absorb water. It is a sponge waiting for water.... There are better products.

I am having a brain fart right now and can't think of the other stuff I have used. My shop is 1 hr away. I'll remember later and post it. It has metal in it. Silver gray stuff...

If you don't remove or get rid of the rust, it will come back. Air lets it comeback.

Metal to Metal is what I think it is. You can use a bondo type filler on top of that.
I think others are polyester type fillers. They should say talc free.
Rage is a polyester type filler

3m(bondo) makes other fillers too. I seem to remember a gold something or something gold....

It will come to me later.... I know some people who do body work who say "you get what you pay" for in all this stuff.
More $$$ does not make it better just because it costs more.

I did know a bodyman whose driver was a bondo magnet. He would hit a deer about every other month. He got where he didn't feel like fixing it or spending a lot of $$$ on it.... He kept if for a loooooonnnnnnggggggg time

If you look at the ones after that, you can see the steps that they use to repair it. You will see that they use metal to metal and them filler then go to others.

I found the evercoat site. This has all the other fillers, skim coats and more. They make good stuff.

http://www.evercoat.com/index.aspx

I have to go to the trash dump so I will check back later....

Dont know if these are in your area but these places sell PPG paints and should have good quality fillers.
