OK, UPDATE. The crank pulley mark is @ 0 deg. cam dowel pin is 12 o'clock, can't see the crank key. # 4 on compression both valves loose, with #2 ex and #3 in. closed. The dist. slot, narrow side, is NOT facing front. Narrow side facing appro. 10-11 o'clock pos. Rotor facing approx 4-5 o'clock position. Wired the cap as such. wont fire. turned dist. little bit CCW fired up!. let engine warm up. disconnected vacuum adv. timed engine to 6 deg BTDC. killed motor. WILL NOT START. turn back dist. CW and will fire up. time again to 6 deg. kill motor and will NOT START. turning dist CCW from starting pos will make motor idle up, CW will idle down. Tried to adjust carb to compensate for timing issue, will not straighten out. Found out the electric choke don't work, so I disconntected.

When the cam line is lined up with the rocker arm line the timing mark (circle and triangle) is at the appro. location of 9-10 o'clock. Is this CORRECT?????? I called the guy who sold the luv to the kid I bought it from and he said it ran GOOD. not a problem. started every time. He had it for 3 years. The only problem he had with it was some carb issues. the kid drove it off the lot! He nor anyone he knows of messed with the motor except to put plugs, points, rotor, cap, wires and fluid change on it.

I was gonna settle for wiring the cap 180 deg out but it will start at one mark run like crap till i time it and not start on the timed marked.? I'm at a lost!!! Please HELP. It sounded so good to hear it run finally!!. Thank you Lee

Yes, the marks on the sproket will be at the 9 or 10 oclock area.

It sounds like at some point, that eng. was torn into. The builder put the oil pump in wrong. It's ok, it can live this way as you have already discovered. This is why your dist. slot is not right at TDC. This just means you plug your wires into the cap off one or mole spots to cover for it.

I think 6 deg. is a little low anyway. I would gor for 8 or 10. Heck 12 is cool if it runs best there and doesn't ping when you get on it. just put it where it runs nice and smooth and then adj. your idle. Run it!

First off, a BIG THANKS to everyone who HELPED me out and the makers of this site. I got the luv running and starting finally, though not as good as the 78', but is does start and run!!! :D This winter after I do a motor swap on the 78' I'm gonna freshen up the 80's motor and do it right, even might do some lil tweaking to the motor. I know this site has alot to offer with motor building. I took the bed off and Iam going to build a flat bed 4x4 with mild big tires, like 30 or 31". Again a BIG thanks you to ALL!! Lee
