Hi. Got a 1980 4x4 that I keep on a farm and seldom drive.
Yesterday I noticed a very high-pitched, metallic screech coming from front right (passenger) wheel. (Seemed to be higher-pitched in reverse).
Sounds like metal-on-metal. I figure its gotta be hub-related.
Any insight or advice regarding a starting point?
I have limited mechanical abilities and even less patience ;-).

Thanks.

Check the brake pads as most have a metal tab that will rub the rotors(i call them tattle tales) when the pads get wore down and it is louder when in reverse, these tell you that the pads are about to be metal to metal and need replaced now.

Similar to TJ's correct answer you might get off cheap. A rock tossed up and lodged at rotor can do the same, especially on a farm truck used in the fields.

Interesting...I just had complete brake job in March. Have put maybe 50 miles on truck since then.
Note: This "metal-on-metal" noise is constant if truck is rolling (especially noticeable at slower speeds).
If indeed rotors, would it still screech if I'm not braking? Thx.

It will make noise roling even when the brakes are applied. Pull your rims and have a look around. It could even be a rock inbetween the sheild and the inner surface of the rotor.

Maybe a rock between caliper and wheel or caliper is not setting right and rubbing i had this problem when i got my 80 4X4 and it was the wheels that were put on the truck. Yes and check the rock shield for stones or being bent.
