I'm thinking about taking the drivetrain out of a chevy 1500 4X4 and shoe horning it up under an '80 LUV. I'm thinking there's a reason why there aren't any 4X4 LUV's out there with the V8 powerplant, but I can't find it. I'm thinking that the front pumpkin would get in the way, but a straight axle and a small lift could fix that. Any suggestions?

Your on the right track. Swap the eng., trans., transfer case, and axle.

I am in the process of doing about the same thing right now except I replaced the drivetrain with a 350,turbo 350 trans,NP 205 T-case,narrowed a Chevy Dana 44 6" for the front,Narrowed a Chevy 14 bolt FF 6" for the rear, used J-10 Jeep front springs in the front, used wagoneer front springs in the rear, and a toyota power steering gearbox for steering. If you decide to go with a SAS plan on adding 8" to the front of your frame rails unless you find some really short springs. But with all that said it can be done I just don't think it can be done with the stock front diff.

Sounds like you got it under control, but how big of tires are you going to use.

To tell ya the truth, I think I'm gonna keep the stock size tires on it... I don't want it to be a really obvious thing that it's modified, and super swampers would be a dead give away. I might go with wider ones, but that all comes with clearances... Also, here resently I've been thinking about a newer car engine. It would fit better without modification, and still double my power. Let's just say I thought this whole V8 thing up before I thougt about gas $... the 26.6 mpg that mine gets right now is the only thing holding me back...

I dont blame ya, but your going to have to lift at least 6'' just to clear the front pumpkin, I would at least use 35s.
