What's up fella's? I'm runnin into a little problem w/my recently rebuilt buick 231. I have only taken the luv a total of 1 maybe 2 miles, up the street and down the street to get gas. Here's the problem, whenever I'm slowin down, or just puttin up the street the engine starts to over heat bad. I already removed the thermostat because I don't have a heater, installed an electric fan, and still have my manual fan attached. Any ideas? Thanks!

Do you have a fan clutch attatched? If so make sure it is good. Also you should have a thermastat installed or the water can flow through the radiator too fast.

Have you tryed "Burping It", park it on a slight incline while still running and top the radiater up. You may have air trapped in the block. Running an engine without a thermostat is a bad idea, the rushing water can dislodge any crud buildup in the block and block your radiater.

Dose it cool down when you pick up speed or rev the motor up? If so then check the water pump also check the pump and make sure it is the right rotation although this should not be a problem with the 231 it could be.I had this heating problem with my 455 when i had the racing pulleys on the motor (slowed the pump speed) when i went back to the street (stock) pulleys it made a lot of difference and cools better but my radiator is still alittle small for this big of motor.

I took out the old thermostat because it was junk, so I'm installin the new one tonight, I'm thinkin that's the problem. Water pump is brand new, so I know it's not that. I guess I'll see tonight! Thanks for the help guys!

If that doesn't do it then it might be good to pull the radiator and take it into a radiator shop for a flow test.

I did one engine swap and had tested radiator by sticking a garden hose i,n packing rags around and checking flow to bottom outlet: good radiator! NOT!! It flowed water but only through outside rows, entire center was clogged. Shop flushed it for about $25 back then, good as new.

Reminder use somthing like a screw drive and cycle the new thermostat as new ones tend to stick the first time and i have seen the temp. get as high as 250* plus before opening.

Is your radiator cap at the highest point of your cooling system? If it isnt theres gonna be a big air pocket in there, I had heating problems with my 400 till I relocated my cap to get the air bubble out.
