My blue 78 has been down for about 6 months now. (been busy with other stuff).

I was driving it when it started knocking. Sounded like a rod to me.

I dropped the oil pan and all looked good. I pulled the valve cover and all looked good. I pulled the head and found a blown head gasket between 1 and 2. BINGO!!! So now I need parts and back together we go!

What are your opinions on the best brand of head gaskets for the G200, with a G200 head? It's all stock.

Cool, Thanks. I think I can get Felpro from the parts store I use.

I'd agree with Felpro but they are #2 in my book right behind an actual Isuzu gasket. Check out http://isuzu.stcharlesauto.com/ for about the best Isuzu parts department around. The Isuzu guys over on http://www.4x4wire.com swear by them for parts. They used to have a guy named Merlin around there that really knows his stuff. Also used to be they would knock off some $s if you mentioned you read about them on 4x4wire.com or online and shipping is very reasonable. <edit> forgot to mention, call them for the best info. Click on the link at the top to parts department to find the number. Their web order form doesn't cover Isuzu back past about 1990 <edit>

Personally, if I had the money to do it right I'd go with the Isuzu head gasket, and get the Felpro kit to cover the rest of the gaskets (intake, exhaust, valve cover, etc). That said, last truck I put a head on I used a Felpro gasket and misc gaskets I had laying around. Several years later it is still running strong.

Have the head checked for flatness and such and look for cracks, especially around #2 and #3 exhaust valve seats. Also helps to do a quick retorque on the head bolts after about a thousand miles. The Felpro gasket says it is "permatorque" but it never hurts to be sure.

Yea, I should have retorqued it probably. The eng. had about 7800 miles on it since the rebuild.
My parts store guy ordered me ... I forget the brand name, but I asked for the best he could get, He ordered a set from a Japanese co. He swore by them. But then again he is Asian and maybe just helping out his brother back home. It's what us white guys would do! :D

$49.01 plus tax for a head set. That's head, both manifolds, and valve cover gaskets.
