I wondered why my motor was getting so hot.. I installed a Mallory Voltmaster Mark II ignition coil, WITHOUT a ballast resistor. I thought the coil was bad, it literally melted the points immediatly. So bad that the contacts wer eno longer touching, but one contact on the lower portion of another point of the points. MAN that is a hot coil! It runs good (Carb issues aside).

Question here, t-wolf, does your Mallory coil match your stock one in terms of primary resistance, secondary resistance, and voltage rating, etc? I would think you'd want one as close to stock as possible or you might run into heating probs, etc. Then it's a drop in replacement. For example, when I upgrade my '72 coil I need 1.5 ohm primary, 11kOhm secondary resistance and 40,000 volts (specs of my stock coil). For me, a Pertronix (PNX-40011) matches closely with stock, and I don't anticipate problems with a hot coil or burning points.

Those are important questions, however in my excitment I just bolted it on and the melting began.

I put the stock resistor in line with the + and now the points stay perfectly cool. I am not sure what the resistance is, however this truck makes a lot mro elow end power now I am sure because of this coil.

Sounds like you got the circuit balanced out then. Must have been too much current in the points circuit, which has been controlled through use of a resistor. Glad you now have a 'tractor' of a truck.
