Hello,

I got a Mallory Voltmaster Mark II from a friend (I had to rig it up to work, it was missing an ignition wire.) I got it to work VERY well. My truck is noticeably more driveable (Still the carb related hesitation) however now my temperature is getting out of hand.

I also had to repair my fuel sendsing unit, and I got some water in the gas, but I have all but driven the water out, and put some HEET in it to absorb the water. Could this have anything to do with the overheating? However, the truck didn't seem to run hot when I had the water in it, just really, really bad.

If the spark is hotter now, what do I have to do to make the engine run cooler?

Thanks!!

Coils run somewhat hot, high performance coils run hotter. Temperature wise too

THe coil should have nothing to do with the engine temperature...

mytmouz is right. I thought you were talking about the coil and how hot it was to touch, You need to find the real problem with the cooling system. You might go to the FLAPS and buy a temperature gauge to check it out. Or if someone has one of those point and shoot temperature sensors, get a reading on your radiator.

I agree a coil upgrade won't cause engine to heat up more. Could be the ignition is a bit too far advanced, that will heat an engine. Too lean a mixture will also cause engine to heat.

You can pull thermostat and toss it in a pan of water and watch for when it opens as water nears a boil. Should be opening about when the water starts to growl before a boil, when first bubbles are seen on bottom of pan.

Also make sure bottom radiator hose isn't collapsing which sometimes happens if the spring wire in it corrodes away.

Good to start engine cold with radiator cap removed. Watch water in the filler hole to see what happens when thermostat opens. You don't want to see a flow of bubbles come rushing through, indicating poor head bolt torqueing, blown headgasket, cracked head or cracked block...

Hello,

I washed my gas tank down to remove the sending unit to repair it, and... i thought I had water in my tank, but..

At first it wouldn't idle (It probably had water in it) so I ran it and ran it and ran it until I got more gas, and added water remover.

It was running really good with only minor problems (Aside from the hesitation) until I filled up again, and now it idles fine, but acts like it has water again.

Anyway, it's running hot, and ti seemed to happen right after I put the coil in, but I guess you guys are right it's probably something else. It gets so hot here I am going to remove the thermostat.

Removing the thermostat can cause overheating problems as well.
Without restriction the water flows too fast through the radiator and does not cool properly in some cases.

I agree with Ripper! Not usually a good thing to do, but a new one is fairly cheap.

It is a new thermostat!

Anyway, it turns out my Mallory coil was literally melting the points and causing the ignition timing to change and making my engine overheat.

I re-adjusted the timing and put a resistor in line with the Mallory coil and now everything is fine.

I knew there was something wrong when it started to overheat suddenly!
