It's the older style, non cross flow head, 1.8. That is if it's still the original eng. in it.
Is the intake and exhaust both on the left side?

if ya really want "MORE POWER" (say it in the voice of the guy from Home Improvment) simply install an engine with a couple more cylinders. 8's always a good option, i'd like to see 10 or 12 tho. Saw a pic of one once with a diesel passat engine in it.
