Do I have to run a after market computer with this trans? I thought it was only for torque converter lock up. I have no clue about this.

NO, but there are wiring kits that you can get to run the lockup one way is a toggle switch the other is using a vacuume switch bothe way are good.
Check Summit,Jegs,or painless wiring.

Be sure to get the right hardware for your carb to run the TV cable or you will burn up the trans in a hurry.

Isn't just like a kickdown cable?

Or you can get a non-lockup converter?

On these trans it's more than a kickdown cable. It's called a throttle position cable and it controls the shift point, firmness, etc. I believe it has a direct effect on the hydraulic pressure in the trans.

As for the lockup, you need to hook it up but there isn't much to it. I used to have mine running off a pressure switch on the trans that would engage the lockup in 4th gear.

You are correct Ben the cable controls the hyd. pressure in the trans so there is correct pressure vs power and if set wrong the trans will burn up in a hurry. But dont let that bother you as it can be done with the proper hardware and you will have many miles of trouble free driving and these little 200R4s are a pretty tough trans.

The kit ben is talking about can also be hooked to the brake light switch and will unlock when the brakes are applied .

Yep, i have a vaccuum switch kit but will probably use a toggle. Still don't know the difference between lock up and non lockup. Just dense here LOL

I don't remember any special wiring on my old 200r4. It was behind a Olds 350 diesel. 400k miles. I don't think the early ones had a lockup convector. If so it must have worked of the brake light switch like they said. But all the GM 4speed automatic transmission are based off the 200r4-700r4.

I have a lock-up converter so I bought the kit. I also bought a Lokar cable so I should be good to go.

Keep us updated on this . Looks like i'll be using 1 of the 2 2004r s in my 67 . I bought the prindle for the steering column and the locar linkage kit to make it work . I also am using a Buick GN converter . It is supposed to be 1800-2200 stall with lock up . Very interested in how this works out for you . :egeek

These transmissions are great when they work, but they sure don't handle the HP if you hammer on them. I've got some stories...
