Anybody have a fix for the gas pump always shutting off when trying to fill the tank? It works to turn the nozzle upside down, but telling it to the attendants is getting old. 1979 LUV, stock.

Thanks.

I have the same problem. I hold the nozzle in all the way and run the gas in at the slowest speed the pump will run.

What's a gas station attendant? I don't think I remember them.

I have that problem on my luv as well. I have to fill mine slow too.
Perhaps someone on here has an after market filler neck (not sure on the name lol, the part the gas cap goes to).

Sometimes I have a little trouble but most of the time it's fine.

That does suck that you can't pump your own gas in OR. Sounds like a "create a job" thing to keep the H.S. flunkies busy. Which is funny. The average person can't pump gas, but a supposedly "trained" drop out flunky can.

The whole thing in OR is basically linked to the lumber industry. During a serious downturn in the early 70's (I think, I'd have to go review all the governors), the State really wanted to keep lumber 'professionals' here until the industry picked back up. So they made a law that only attendants can pump gas in OR, and a bunch of lumberjacks took local jobs at the pump. That did the trick, and being as lumber is a cyclical industry, OR still holds the world title for dimension lumber production. BC is gaining fast, but with the weak dollar, I don't expect to see them pull ahead until late this century when their forest management practices really come to fruition...

The guys at my local station always stuck the pump in upside down on the LUV. I don't think it's just the trucks though, I think there are some pumps that don't handle the lack of a flapper valve well.

Interesting. You learn something new every day.

My 97 F250 has 2 tanks, and on those trucks I think it's the lack of angle into the tank that makes it so you have to run the nozzle about 1/2 to 3/4, and hold it up, and only half way in the neck. Otherwise the air bleed in the neck spurts fuel and shuts off the nozzle.

I have to pump it slow with all of my trucks too. I never tried turning the nozzle upside down though. I actually try to keep the nozzle out a little and try to go about medium speed. I have to listen carefully too if it isn't too noisy at the pump because if you aren't careful you will get an overflow when trying to fill up. I also try to estimate what the gauge says I still have in the tank and knowing the tank is a 13 gallon tank then I can keep an eye on the pump amount as well to keep from over filling and having a mess. I have never had this issue with any other vehicles, but they all have been newer. My guess is it happens because of the turn in the filler neck is close to the end of the nozzle when it is inserted fully, so the splash back of the fuel causes the safety valve to click the pump off. I am betting the nozzles from back in the 70's were shorter so this could be the reason?

Quite a great thread going here, and the problem of pumps shutting off seems to be the hose angle causing too much splashback. Mokadeth gives me an idea though. I wonder if I try just barely passing the flapper instead of putting the entire nozzle in. Would the angle be far enough from the nozzle's output then to allow (finally) a smooth flowing fillup? Ah, but then the danger of having gas splashed all over oneself would be very real. Maybe just pulling the nozzle out an inch would be an improvement. I always pump my own gas and always with the nozzle upside down; and with the nozzle fully inserted. Some pumps seem to do better than others.

I remember as a kid having attendants. Lots of gas stations were owned and operated by one family and even one man. They used to clean your windows front and back and it was a normal stop to just pay for the gas. I remember when gas was 55¢ a gallon then too. Times have changed.

Never worked for me, just always had to pump slow.

Thats how I learned most of my automotive skills, working as a attendent/mechanic at an Amoco station in the mid 80's when I was a teenager with my LUV, one of the best jobs I ever had (not pay wise though). Soon as the boss left at 5, I would bring my LUV up on the lifts and tinker while everyone else went out back and got clouded! 8O

Old school, we worked at stations (full service) and it was slow at night. So you and your friends would come over and work on adjusting valves (solid lifter) carbs, timing and what ever. We were able to stay after closing doing different stuff. I rebuilt my first engine after hours. I changed a rear end out of a Dodge Charger at a Utotem store one night after they were closed. Sorta cool, and I worked for a guy that was OK with that, it also took a little incentive to have us work for so cheep. It was a Enco station, so he had to be open the hours they made him..... Oh the good ol' days... Those were the days when people would come in and get a dollar's worth of gas and want the full service, which we did. Battery's, belts, hoses, tires and those we did too. No self service then. Even checked the water in the battery's. I still can wash the heck out of a car window...... No streaks.

In CA we have the plastic skirts to collect vapors on the gas nozzles, you can make gas come out by pulling those back with your hand. Works for gas cans, etc. I had to do that thing where you pull back the plastic skirt thing and point the gas down the hole, or the gas wouldn't go in. I'll try the upside down trick next fill up (won't be for a while). I'm "luv"ing how little gas my new truck uses--I used to have a full size 82 GMC, not the best on gas.

I've had the same problem, but pushing it in all the way seems to help. Then gain, I've heard that the CA gas nozzles are pretty unique...

Looks like there isn't a sure-fire solution, but I appreciate all the input and stories.

Oregon is one of the few states that won't let you pump your own gas, but I'm kinda getting used to it, especially as much as it rains here.

And yeah, I remember 35¢ gas AND cigarettes; used to get them both at the local Phillips 66 station.
