They just opened a new 1/8th mile track here in San Diego on the Barona Indian Res. Heres some excitement from opening day:

gives a whole new meaning to fire bird, that would totally suck. it looks like it took awhile for the safety crew and the fire dept. to get there.

Dont they make an onboard fire extinguisher system...ya know push the panic button and wola ...the fire goes out! Sure looks like a crispy critter.Maybe he well think about that the next time...if there is a next time! I have had carbs catch fire before...never that bad. Knock...on wood! Maybe the fire crew gets paid by the hour...

Mine almost did one day, I had spilled some fuel on the motor pouring some into the carb to prime it and had a back-fire when I went to start it. It got a little scary but I got it out. Had to buy a new foam air filter as it was literaly toast!! I hope that guy had full insurance!!

I was there, it the tracks first day for opening. When i drove in there was a fire truck sitting there. About an hour into racing the fire bird went for a pass and had a nasty nitrous backfire through the intake. The car was half way down track and the officials got down to it but they were afraid to open the hood. They emptied 3 ten pound fire extiquishers on it and it didnt help. Then they called for the fire truck and it was no where to be found and it took the fire truck 15 minutes to go 8 miles on a small two lane road. By the time they got there, there wasnt anything left on the car worth a shit. SUCKS TO BE HIM!!!!

I guess the type of car matched its unfortunate end. "FIREbird!" That's the same way my first Luv ended its life. Only mine was stolen and burned to the ground. BASTARD!

I heard that they really didnt want to go near it when the driver said he had a nitrous bottle in the back. people said when the fire got to the back it heated the bottle and the pressure release blew. sucks. the car was a little more than a stock 94.

Did the firetruck have to come from Lakeside? I thought Barona had their own FD on the Res.

theres a lot of joking going on about that on some of the local boards. Car- b- Que, FIREbird, Roasted FireChicken, etc.

seen a car go up at brotherhood raceway (long beach) once. my cousin and i were running his nova there and this other nova in the staging lanes nitrous backfired and poof. they guy panicked and jumped out leaving his fuel pumps on. my cousin and i were daring eachother to run up and dive under the back of the car with a pair of diagonals to cut the wires to the pump. the track officials got wind of our plans and told us to leave. car burned to the ground. driver jumped over the fence and ran off never to be seen again.
