Hello,

I have 2 Haynes manuals for my truck. One is an older manual that is 3 times as thick as the "newer" one. The older one is about 100 times more comprehensive, as if the newer one was purposely condensed, and a *LOT* of information was left out.

The new manual says to adjust the idle rpm, then adjust for smooth idle, then adjust rpm again.

The older one is a little more complicated, and calls for a vacuum gauge and CO monitor, if available.

If I were to adjust the carb as per the new one, would I be OK? What is it that made Haynes leave out so much information?

Also, the manual says excessive fuel consumption can be an idle that is set too high-would that affect highway driving conditions?

I just adjust the idle when the motor is warm, then adjust the idle mixture screw until the idle drops then rich a turn or so till it idles smooth again.

My question is... Why give so complex instructions? Did they find out that just by idling fast you could do without the vacuum gauge and CO meter? Somehow, I don't think so, but if it's true then that is what I will do..

My idle drives me crazy. One minute the thing runs just perfect. The next morning it stalls at every stop on the way to work. Take it to lunch, thing runs perfect. Drive it home and the idleis so fast its like cruise control.

Exactly....... SO weird you say that, 2 days ago my truck started and ran so bad it was like Ihad a 50/50 mix of gas and water, it barely got me home-the next day, it's OK. I Disabled some emissions crap and reset my idle mixture and setscrews and it seems to run OK, the HUGE flat spot that caused the stalling is almost gone, but still there-what the heck changed? I don't get it..
