When I say power, I mean pulling power, or that spurt of speed we all like. That's gone. Torque isn't being supplied to the wheels and I believe the weak link is the clutch. I just put on a new Weber; I hope it's not the problem, but I don't understand the sound change in the Luv. It doesn't roar like it was doing. Is it because of the different performance of running with a slipping clutch? Can the slipping clutch be heard? All I know is I can't hear anything from it. Anyway, I need to get my butt down to order these parts before it gets too late. Rondog, do you want to see some pics here, or would I do a new thread? All in favor of a new thread say aye.

You wont 'hear' a slipping clutch.

the engine revs will flare, so the motor should make more noise not less, you will hear that. When you put your foot down with the clutch out, the engine will rev harder than the truck goes.

you might smell it.

A good test is to let the clutch out in top gear. This puts the most load on the clutch. If the motor does not stall straight away your clutch is stuffed.

From the sound of what you answered my Question with I say you have more then a clutch issue.

Here's my experience: Perfectly good clutch and flywheel were slipping. Took my motor out 100 times, and the 99th time I used brake cleaner on the clutch, and flywheel. No more slipping. Clutch and flywheel both looked good, but obviously weren't, or were contaminated.

The pressure plate and flywheel (new ones) should be cleaned as there is a film to keep them from rusting most times. Same with brake rotors and drums.

I was talking about a used one w/ plenty of meat still on it.. I didn't think there was anything wrong with it, but brake cleaner is cheap.. You are right though, you need to clean new ones, too..

Fulla, as Rodeobob said, take this test. Get the truck moving about 20mph. Put it in 4th gear, let the clutch all the way out and floor the gas peddle. The truck should just chug and knock and be pissed off at you. If it revs up but the truck doesn't take off and go, the clutch is slipping.
ONLY DO THIS FOR A COUPLE SECONDS!!!! It is just a test.

And I think there are enough threads in here on changing clutches and engines and such. If you need a clutch, just do it. No use in duplicating info already posted.

Good luck. I don't know which one you should wish for.... a bad clutch or maybe worse... an eng. problem.

Ugh, yes I know. It's a lot of work removing the transmission and I don't really wish to have to do it, but I'm going to borrow a transmission jack and a pilot bearing puller, and change it all out. Ordered the parts today.

Do the test first. Make sure it's the clutch before you tear into it for no reason.

You dont need a transmission jack.
One person can do it easy enough. Trick is to get your truck up at the right height.

I dont know about a lot of work. If youve got all the parts, i could clock on at 8 am and be finished by the time you have cooked my BBQ lunch at 12.

You might need a couple of car stands and a set of ramps.
The rest of the tools i could bring myslef in my pocket, prolly only cost you about $6000 to get me there. lol.

Worth every cent.

Bob.

Parts = $100.00 (roughly)

Decent BBQ lunch = $50.00 (roughly, shrimp are spendy)

Bob's travel fare = $6000.00 (roughly,gotta see those pockets)

Watching Bob do all the work while describing in detail every step with a heavy Aussie accent = PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!

Where's my Mastercard???

LOL

What about option 2

I could video call collect and guide you through it. Would probably help if you set up some kind of helmet cam.

Thats a crock you know, i have never ever been to a BBQ where there has been shrimp on the menu.

Sure the odd crayfish or yabbies (crawfish i do believe you guys call em) maybe the odd prawn but none of them cooked on the BBQ, but never a shrimp. Sometimes fish on the BBQ but usually its steak, saussages and lamb chops. Oh and the odd rissole, the big must is heaps of onion and potato sliced thin and cooked up into chips.

I have the jack stands and the ramps. I don't have the airfare. I have a nice Brinkmann bbq, and I would rotisserie some whole chickens over charcoal and then have potato salad and brown sugar baked beans.

The parts were over $200, with a $30 core charge on the flywheel. It's going to be five days before it's here. Maybe I should do the test like Rondog says.

Hot dogs and beer and I am a happy man.

With how many times I have pulled my motor out I should be setting a new record. It's really not hard, just time-consuming, and when the monotony factor sets in at about the 5th time, it makes things 100 times more difficult. It is a good thing to have a 17 year old boy helping remove bolts, it makes things go so much quicker.

I tried the test. It didn't work the way it was supposed to, and I think the reason is because the clutch is not that worn yet. It's sort of semi-working, but not with a lot of pulling power. When I pop the clutch out in fourth gear going 20 mph, it sort of quiets down and gradually picks up speed, but not hard and fast as before. It definitely isn't revving up.

If it is not slipping it is not bad. I think you may have engine problems.

Well the engine revs real good out of gear. Starts fine, and idles smooth. I suppose I could check the timing and maybe the compression.

Option 2 is out of the question......that would mean I'd have to do the work.
Not that I haven't and don't know how,just don't wanna.LOL

My way,all I have to do where I live is get a permit, sell tickets, drink beer and answer questions.
Questions like "A Ute,weren't they part of the Apache tribe?"
and "WTF is a Bonnett?" "Is his name Dundee?".....etc.

Ticket sales will pay for it all.

BTW...you forgot "Crawdads"
