So I'm changing all my gaskets out in my engine in hopes to reduce the amount of scum accruing on my engine (while at the same time, I'm upgrading to an offy and headers :o ).

anyway, so I was taking the front cover (I think thats what it is) off. According to my manual, I am supposed to take the oil pump off. I unbolted the oil pump, but it all fell apart. there was a little X thing inside of it that looks like it is supposed to spin, and it turns out the distributor attaches to the other side of it. Anyway, I figured I just screwed myself by taking that off. Can anyone help me put it back together? The manual says to line up the knotches in it, and I do, but it looks like they can line up a number of ways. Then, I'm also not sure which way my distributor was supposed to point... :(

The good news, is I did set the engine to TDC, so if anyone has any advice, I'd greatly appriciate it. This is my first time I've ever pulled an engine, so it's a learning experience.

(FullaLuv, I'm hoping you have some photos???)

I found this post from a while ago,

http://forums.luvtruck.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11161&hilit=oil+pump

Now I remember the distributor pointing up and down, because I had it at TDC, but I don't remember if it was leaning to the left or right, so I guess now I have a 50:50 chance of getting it right! If not, I might be able to turn the distributor 180 degrees... who knows.

Oh well...

if it does end up 180 out you can swap the plug wires around too. I found that worked better on the 80 I had that was screwed up when I got it.

When correctly installed, the mark on the oil pump shaft is to the rear. I have photos on my sticky thread "FullaLuv's Birth of an Engine", first page. I hope you're not using dial-up!!!

Here's a page from the Series 8 manual. Don't you have a manual? I wouldn't want to be working on an engine without one!

I have a haynes manual, but it completely ignores the topic of the oil pump. I guess it just assumes your pump doesn't open up.

Thanks FullaLuv, this will be helpful.

(PS, I'm not on dial-up... I'm on a university Internet connection, which is super fast!)
