Sounds like it might just be wired backwards. Usually the stock unit has one wire with a stripe, probably yellow.

Below is a snippet from this thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13577&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=mallory
Quote:
Here's directions (let me know if I left something out):

1. Remove the negative coil lead on the distributor body.
2. Snip the fork off the end, and crimp on a male spade.
3. Crimp an eyelet that will fit on the coil secondary post on the end of a 14-20" piece of 12/14 gauge wire, and a male spade on the other end.
4. Roll the fan until the engine is at TDC. Remove the coil to distributor lead at the distributor (The one in the middle of the cap, same gauge as a plug wire). Pull the distributor cap to make sure the rotor is pointing in the general direction of the #1 plug lead. Tuck the cap up and away from the work area, no need to disconnect the wiring just yet.
5. Mark the body of the distributor in relation to the block AND the rotor in relation to the distributor shell (just in case you have to put it back).
6. Pull the distributor bolt and hold down, pull the vacuum advance hose, remove the distributor.
7. Put the new rotor on the electronic distributor, orient it closely to the way the old one came out, and slide it in. Make sure the blade end engaged properly by slightly twisting the rotor. If it won't seat all the way into the block, wiggle the rotor until it drops in. Put the distributor hold down back on, and bolt it down, but leave it loose enough to be able to move the distributor without breaking stuff. Reconnect the vacuum advance hose (or plug it until you've set the timing).
8. Place the spade of your new (red?) wire from the + side of the coil in the slot with the black wire with a yellow/orange stripe.
9. Place the spade from the old distributor (- side of coil) in the other slot.
10. Remove the battery cable or whatever you feel is safe at this point.
11. Disconnect the wiring to the + side of the coil, slip your new (red?) wire eyelet on, and put it back together.
12. Put your new cap on, and move the plug wires from the old cap to the new. Don't forget the coil wire.
13. Start your truck.
14. Adjust the timing as needed. Tighten down the distributor hold down, reconnect the vacuum advance.

Hope that helps...

Hard to say. If it were mine, I'd hook it up right and try it.

Use your own discretion, but I initially hooked mine up backwards. I only spun it once (one key strike), and didn't suffer any problems. Mine worked fine once I hooked it up per above...

Good luck. If you bought a new one, and did fry it, you might want to see if you could get it replaced under warranty...?

I've ran both the earlier style one with the exterior ignition module mounted on the coil, and the newer one with the ignition module located under the distributor cap, and the newer interior mounted one performed better for me. Whether my engine being an Impulse 1.9 g200z makes a difference is doubtful. I personally think the newer one is just a better workin/quality distributor for the G series engines.

Mine came out of a mid to late 80's Pup with a 1.9, but the ones for the same year range Imark or Impulse will work too. The first couple of years that they came out with the old style electronic distributor were in '80 -'83, and I'm pretty sure everything from then on with a G series engine had the newer (and improved) distributor. It's very easy to tell the difference. Just look to see if it has the module mounted on the coil (old style) or inside the distributor cap (newer style), and say good bye to your old PITA mechanical points and hello to better performance and better gas mileage.

Yep..all G series engines (G180 for the Luv and Imark, G200 for the Pup, and G200z for the Impulse) use the same distributor.

I am runing a Pertronix in one of mine now, and very happy with it.
I was asking because I want to be able to spot the vehicles at the junk yard and get a couple more for my other trucks at a cheaper price. So what I'm getting at, Taz, is... Thanks. 8)

They are all 'Z' motors.

That 'Z' means SOHC alloy crossflow head.

The Impulse came with the SOHC G200Z as well as the DOHC G200W. The letter at the end means lots and lots of differences.

You guys are lucky, we got the G161Z motor here in abundance and it was a different block height so the timing cover etc was different to the G180Z and G200Z.

Bob.

Also, what coil and out of what should you pair up with it?

I'm running an Accel high output coil that is working real well. You can buy it at almost any parts store for under $40.00. The later model Luvs, the Imarks, the Impulse, and the Pups all use the same one as long as they are equipped with a G180 or a G200 engine.

Also, if you look on http://car-part.com/, you can probably also find an electronic distributor somewhere near where you live. Just look for one for any Isuzu vehicle, preferrably one that runs a 1.9 G200z engine. The most common ones are the early 80's Impulses and Pups. Some of the Imarks had them too, but most of the early 80's Imarks had the G180 engine with the old style electrical distributor with the external ignition module.

Any place you find one should have a toll-free phone # so you can call them up and have them check it to see if it's the one with the ignition module inside the distributor cap, in case they are too far for you to drive over to them to take a look for yourself. And once you find one, almost all will ship it to you, once you arrange some way for you to pay for it.

Good luck and happy hunting!
