Speedometer reads way off… luv originally came with 4:10 gears, they went south so I put in a 4:56 by mistake and it would read way off …. Now I put 4:10 back in it and it is still reads like the 4:56 but the rpm’s are down like they used to be… what would cause it to still read way high? And what are the other gears I could put into the trany to drop it down it’s about 15 to 20 mph off... hope you understood what i was trying to say

The speedo in the LUV's are driven off of the transmission output shaft. By changing the tire size as you have from stock to lower profiles (or smaller tires) this will have the speedo reading fast. I have in the past seen speedo calibration kits but it has been years since.

so these don’t have like others do ... different colored gears for different ratios that slip into where the cable goes into the trany ?

yeah i just dough mine out also to take a look, still cant figure out why it didn’t go back like before when it had the 4:10 gears, it was only about 5 mph off but still reads like the 4:56 gears 15 to 20 mph off... but at least my rpms are back to normal, about 65 pmh = 3500rpm…. Did find out that the 76 has 2/20 gear in the trany now need to find out what the 79 had …. My book is for the 76 … ok found out the 81/82 has a gear drive of 6/17 but that wont work different type … looks like the 71/75 wont work at all so any one have books from 77 to 80 that would have the gear drive ratio in them

There are other speedo gears out there. I'm not sure what others will fit, but the usual trans swap suspects are an option. Impulse, PUPs, maybe an older 75 luv tranny that was set up for the 4.56 gears.

It is damn odd that swapping the rear end gears didn't fix it, something else must have changed since it read correctly like your tire size.

well dug thru my hanes manual and found series 11&12 speedo ratio is 6/17 then they show 8&9 gear backlash but not speedo gear ratio. now 1&2 have a 17/5 ratio and 3&4 have a 5/18 ratio
