My '79 factory manual gives the following specs for the fuel sending unit

Full position: 14.9 to 19.1 ohms
Half full: 40.5 to 49.5 ohms
Empty position: 113.5 to 126.5 ohms

If you are going to use a after market gm gauge, you can get an after market gm fuel sending unit from JC Whitney Co. You will have to cut the unit to fit the gas tank, and do some minor drilling out of the mounting holes to get it to fit. The instructions will tell you what you have to do.
