i just stuffed a motor from a 79 into my 80 and rebuilt the carb off my 80. now i have a flat spot when i accelerate and it surges and backfires through the exhaust. I set the timing, but had to time by ear to get it running smooth. It is hard to start but idles great once warm. I think i may need to adjust the choke and/or idle mixture.. please throw any ideas my way

Sounds right to me. I found that the Hitachi rebuild kit(s) on both my '78 & '79 wanted the float set too high. I set both of these to run with the float about 1/8" low of center. I'm at about 300 ft above sea level.

Maybe check the EGR circuit, the vac advance, and make sure the dizzy cap isn't tracking...?
