Just out of curiosity what do you all think about comp cams 280* adv duration .480 lift cam? I have been thinking about spicing up my trucks 327 that has a stock cam in it right now while it takes me another year to finish the 350 I am building that may or may not get installed into the same truck. Generally the way I think is anything under .500 lift is a waste of time to change out and waste of horsepower but the set of heads I am planning on using have been milled to the extreme and I dont want to have to pull the fresh 327 out to have the pistons eye browed for a bigger cam. I figured I would try to play it safe and use a smaller cam that so many people seem to like to try avoid clearance issues. The heads that are on the truck right now are fresh with less than 50 miles on them but they dont have screw in studs I would rather use them if I could get away with using the press in studs. I also have another set of heads that I just had redone still in bags from the machine shop that I dont want to use just yet I was planning on using them on my other motor since they have a ton of work done to them set up for a big cam.

I'd go with a 268h in the 327, the 480 is pretty big in a 327 and IMO, will be a dog on the street.

Even with a 2500 rpm stall converter? Will the 280 480 cam work with pressed in studs? I am doubting it will but just curious.

Studs pulling out isn't too big of an issue with hydraulic cams.

My truck has a 2500 rpm stall converter Th-400 with 4.10 gears and short tires 295-50 15s. Running around town which is about all I do with it the thing Im in third gear before I get across the cross walk when taking off from a light. At 45 mph Im turning about 2500 RPMs and just out of bad habbit I shift it manually on most days I actually do drive it which lately is about once a month or so and when I do drive it I drive it pretty hard since it is pretty much just a toy. The only time the motor really ever sees anyting under 2000 RPM is when its parked. Also my truck has Doug Thorley Tri Y headers with 2 and a half inch collectors hooked to dual 2 1/2 inch exhaust with flowmaster 40 series mufflers. With that extra bit of info would that change your minds. Before I got the truck from my father in law had it set up the same way I do but with about a 450hp 350 in it. With all the after market parts he had on it and my pretty much stock 327 Im just trying to do a few low buck things to spice it up a little until I decide if I am going to keep it or sell it for something lighter.

The HE268 by comp is an old grind design but an excellent cam for the 327, the XE268 is one of the best cams to make power with on a 327 - both my corvette and S-10 run this cam and I have been very very happy with it. Screw in studs is highly reccomended due to the aggressive ramp profile of the cam. The bigger cam will make your vacuum signal really crappy and hurt bottom end. it will do fine though if your always turning 5500+ RPM though.

I have the 284 in mine with the 350 and luv it. Vortec heads, ported and polished and roller rockers Hit 2nd gear and hang on.

If yours will be pretty much street driven might be inclined to just to get the stock chevy 300 or 350 horse cam. Great all around cam I think.

Have the 280 in my 400 small block s 10 and 700r4. Stock heads and z28 springs.Works pretty good with 3 :73 gears. Just not an overwhelming machine but runs good on the street. Doesn't take much to make these little trucks scream on the street.

after hearing that the 280 would be to big for the 327 I was wondering about the 350 hp 327 cam. Does the 350 hp 327 cam cam work good? How is the idle quality and where does the power start to fall off etc?

I had the 300 horse in my 67 chevelle as a daily driver. idled good. Great highway driver. if I remember right my best power was around 2000 RPMs. It would cruise down the highway super and still have enough left if you wanted to kick it a bit.
My chevelle was bone stock except I put a 350 tranny in it inplace of the old glide. Stock gears and all. headers. stock heads, Aluminum intakes. headers and Carter ecomomy carb. Used it to haul my drums in for years. Decent milage too.

good cam... I ran one in a 305 for a while, then a 350. It did pretty decent, sounded real good. lots of top end power, little sluggish on the low end with highway gears and a stock converter, but it wasnt bad. I'd run it in the 327... throw 373's and a slight stall converter behind it, it ought to run good.
