Hello,

I purchased my 79 4x4 because I believed it, being a 4 cyl, would get good gas mileage, or, at least-reasonable gas mileage.

However, I am getting 15 MPG at 55 mph highway-which is horrendous-considering a GMC Savannah cube truck (14 footer) gets 20 mpg at that speed, highway!

I am going to put a 5 speed tranny in it, but even then-what kind of mileage am I looking at? I really like this truck, I don't want to get rid of it, but I do want to get better mileage out of it!

So, what kind of mileage are you guys getting out of yours?

P.S. Some friends just bought a Jeep Southeast w/ the 4.0 inline 6 cyl, and it got very close to 30 mpg on the highway.. Why can't these trucks do better than that?

Well you should get better mileage than that! I would say average is anywhere around mid to upper 20's MPG. Probably a little less with a 4x4, but should still be better than 15 MPG. I estimated my stock 2wd '80 automatic a couple different times. 1st time I got approx. 22 MPG and the 2nd time approx. 27. I am guessing I had a good run with a lot more highway miles the 2nd time. I believe mileage goes down when the weather is colder too, but you should still get better than 15. I would say make sure you are tuned up and things are running properly. Proper tire pressure and clean air filter can help increase MPG. A better carb and intake and switching to electronic ignition would help some with mileage and performance. I am sure there are many other little things that make a difference that I haven't mentioned. Don't get discouraged with the LUV though, they are good little trucks!

Mine sucks. About 15 at best last time I checked. My EGR line is broken, might have something to do with it. I don't drive it much... not sure what all is going on with it right now.

My 2002 Dodge Ram Quad Cab 4.7L gets 17. I drive it.

32.5 mpg and rising. :D I have a lot of things that I would like to do with this truck yet so I expect to get it up to at least 35. I work with a guy who was getting 50 with his 2.2L diesel and that would be a dream come true but I will stay on the realistic side for now.

Regards,

Wolfsburg, is your avatar from a movie? Actually, my estimation isn't 15 mpg, it's more like 12 mpg. Actually, that's really unlikely-but I am going by the gauge, and it's not good. (Gauges don't mean anything, though, to be honest). I also misjudged the rpms @55. It SOUNDS like it's winding out, but it really isn't. I can LIVE with 27 MPG, but I would love to do the 5 speed swap.

I am going to get more legroom out of this truck, and I have a plan, I have a good plan!! I am going to bring this truck down in a few days and really have a look at it. I took it for a spin and it seemed pretty capable offroad, it went right through sand, etc. I will get a more accurate review of the mileage soon. Pray for me, guys, I am bringing this thing down here quite a ways in a few days!!

The best way would be to fill up the tank until it is ready to spill out the fill hose, then take a trip and keep track of the miles. Fill it up full again and see how much gas it used then do the math.

My 79 longbed with 4-speed is bone stock and missing the egr crossover pipe. I am averaging about 26 and got around 28 on a recent trip to Virginia and back. I would rule out the egr as a gas mileage issue. How's your carb?

I'm not sure.. I am anxious to get this little truck down here, it has been complication after complication and now I am riding a moped through rainstorms lol! If I have the $ and time, I will rebuild the carb regardless. Before I bring the little truck down here, I am going to do a complete tune-up. I can live with 28 mpg, but I have my mind set on the 5 speed anyway lol!

I'm workin on gettin mine ready for a 5-speed as well. My problem is that I bought a tranny from an 88 p'up with a 2.3 in it, and it requires a clutch disc with more splines. I am having trouble getting the right answer as to whcih clutch will work without any major modifications. If you do not have a 5-speed yet, I would suggest getting one from an older p'up with a 1.8 or 1.9 in it. You will also need the front driveshaft yoke from the same truck.

This is good information. When I get my truck, I have a good idea on how to move the pedals back to get more legroom. I will do what it takes to make this truck mine... I got it from an elderly couple who used to go to church with my boss's brother. People pay millions of dollars to have a home that has a view like theirs does.. literally a rock waterfall and a flowing stream, it's breathtaking. Anyway, the guy didn't want to overcharge for the truck, but it was sentimental to him, and I told him I intend to restore it. He had taken GREAT care of it, and I want to honor that by making it a truck I can be proud of. Let me know if you have any other complications, or what you find out. I know there is a transmission out there for me, and I know it will come to me when it is time.

BTW: Others on this site have said in the past that an older rear drive Impulse 5-speed will work as well, but make sure to get that front driveshaft yoke. I don't want you to end up like me staring at my 5-speed in my trailer every time I walk past it to drive my LUV!

I know it may be hard to believe but about 10 years ago I was getting 38mpg in my 79' Mikado. My dad had installed a different type of carb on it which I'm not sure of. I had to replace it a few years back and I was getting about 23mpg. Now I get 20mpg after getting the head completely redone and all top of the line tune up parts. I think it is my stock carb that got put into it.
