So was looking at the steelies that came in the bed of the truck when i bought and noticed that i had the other two originals for the rear. Ive got the center caps too. Thinkin bout painting them. Trying to decide what colors to match the faded red cause there's no plans for a paint job anytime soon. Any ideas.

Personally,I would stick with white or a light grey for the wheels.

If I were to paint my center caps,I'd match them to my background colors.
Wheel wells,drums,etc.....

I took my original steelies and hit them with some antique white rustoleum! You really should take your time in sanding and cleaning your wheels. Make sure all the oil and grease is off of them. The more prep you put into it the better off they will look. After you hit them with the rustoleum paint then you can clear coat them with some clear spray...they will look good! I use my original white center caps and the setup looks nice.

About your paint....I bet a lot of that would buff out if you have a nice orbital polisher. I was shocked when I buffed my light blue luv...it was chalky looking. People ask me where I got it painted. :)

Good luck with your Luv and nice to see another in the neighborhood!

I too think you could buff the paint on your truck with pretty good results. An $18 Meguires PowerBall and a good liquid rubbing compound would be worth a try.

79-Luv'r has a really good thread here on how to 'roller paint' your rig, too.

For me, I'd go with battleship gray rims and white center caps. Steel wool is a great little item to have when you get to the finish sanding on the rims, it gets all those nooks and crannys. Make sure you blow the rim off before you paint it though. You can also go over it with an old toothbrush and some acetone to clean off all the steel wool 'hairs' if you don't have a compressor.

Have fun :D

Maybe i'll try the buffing compound. it doesn't look like there's any clear coat though. just straight paint.

I say dont touch it with polish etc. Hell dont even wash it.

Its taken 30 years to get that look about it, dont ruin it.

As for the wheels, i painted some, i used a wire wheel in a drill to strip all the paint then just primered them and painted them with pressure packs.

Id go with a flat matt black on the rims. Polish the hubcaps. California purple is the stuff to do that with.

Depends on the look you want....Rat Rod looking or polish the paint up. I could actually go either way on it...the faded red is fairly cool looking..:) I would probably get tired of it though..

by chance, did you purchase this truck in the Pilot Point, Tx area? I seem to recognize it.

Yep...I knew I recognized that truck! I live right outside Denton. I saw it advertised on Craigslist. The seller had it priced at close to 2 grand at one point.
