What kind of abuse can the sbc stock cast crank and stock rods handle? I have read so much about the good and the bad of each that I dont think I actually learned anything at all. Im about ready to start building my motor that will see some cruising around town and an ocasional trip to the strip not a daily driver at all. Im on a beer budget I want to keep what I can use but I dont want to have a time bomb under my hood. I have decided to build a 355 with my goal making around 400-450 hp. My truck has a 4.10 rear end ratio with 295/50 15 tires at 55 mph Im turning 3000 rpms so judging by that Im sure this thing is going to be reving up to around 7000 RPMs on the ocasional trip to the strip. When driving my truck on the street I plan all my routes so that I dont have to get on the freeway at all.

At that horsepower level/rpm range you should be fine. Upgrade the rodbolts though...

Ok so whats all involved with replacing the rod bolts? I noticed when I tore it down after removing the nuts the bolts stayed in the rods. Do they come out easy or are they pressed in? Can I do it myself or do I have to have a machine shop do it? This will be my first time building a complete motor on my own. When I was racing oval track I had an engine builder as a sponser that wouldnt let me do anything but supply the beer.
