Hi...Anyone know what is with the Luv fuel guage???I have two Luvs (73 and 77) and both guages do not work worth beans. I've read where others have the same problem. Is there some inhierent reason that they go out?? Is there a quick fix---like a better ground, etc.? I have to keep a post-it note on the windshield to check the miles or I run out of gas!! Been doing that for years. Thanks...DH

Your fuel gauge problem could be any of the following

1. No voltage to the fuel sending unit: Disconnect the wire (yellow and red on my 79 LUV) to the sending unit on top of the fuel tank. Measure the voltage between the wire and ground. You should see pulsating 7 volts DC. If you don't see this, check the wire, fuses, grounds and voltage regulater (this is the voltage regulater on the back of the instrument panel, not the VR for the alternator). If the temperature guage is working properly, the instrument VR is OK.

2. Defective Sending unit. Again, remove the wire to the sending unit. Check the resistance through the sending unit (connect one lead of an ohm meter to the input connecter on the sending unit and the other lead to a good ground). You should read approximately 220 ohms resistance. If you read infinate ohms, or zero ohms, the sending unit is defective and will need to be replaced or repaired

Note: while doing the above tests, be sure yiou get a good ground. It is sometimes hard to get a good ground because of rust, dirt, etc. You may have to sand off rust to get to bare metal.

What is your fueal guage doing? Always full? Always empty? Erratic movement?

Thanks for the explicit reply. I'll be able to look into the problem with your notes. The temp guage is working fine and the fuel registers about one-half full with a full tank and then drops to bottom -out after I use about 1/2 a tank. From there it doesn't move again until I re-fill the tank. Then it goes back to about 1/2 tank again. Thanks again...Don

WED is pretty much on the money, but there is a bit more to it. There is the possibility that you'll read some resistance (Ohms) across the sender, meaning that it is sort of working. Also your float might be soaked or leaking (your readings are low, which could inidicate a low float), or the resistance is not correct due to corrosion, damage, etc. From what you've described I'd venture that the sending shaft is just gunked up and won't allow the float to travel full up.

Here's another recent thread in a similar vein, I posted here with a link on how to repair your sender ...

http://forums.luvtruck.com/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=

I got so sick of the sender in my old Rambler that I finally coated a fishing bobber with tank sealant and stuck it on the arm. I screwed the bobber to a small hose clamp, clamped it to the sender shaft and then just moved it up and down the shaft until I got it to read close to right. Only took 3 tries...haha...

Good luck :)
