Hey guys, I have a strange problem that I have not yet been able to isolate and I was wondering if any of you might have had the same problem or know what it could be.
So when I start her up (79 LUV 4x4 stock) it runs fine. I can idle the truck for like 2 hours without a problem, both on and off the electric choke. Then I go to drive it and I come to a stop sign and all of a sudden it acts like I have the idle set way too low and tries to cut out on me. So I have to keep revving until I move again otherwise it stalls. I've had a friend hold the gas at a stop sign while I hopped out, increased the idle by quite a bit, and it runs as if the idle is completely normal and thats all it needed. Then when I get home, let the truck sit overnight or a couple days and I go to restart it, the idle is WAY high because I adjusted it at the stop sign. :x Whats the deal man!?!
If ANYONE has anything to offer, PLEASE help! Thanks guys!

Hey I've got the same LUV as you, and have experianced the exact same problem. It used to be just as bad as you've described but I've found as I've driven around for a few months now it somehow has lessoned a bit. Once the engine has warmed up it almost never tries to die on me anymore just driving around. But I have found that, even if the truck is warmed up I can let it sit and idle then go inside and when I come back out find out it has died on me. Kind of a piss off...
So I really can't offer much to help you with, just saying how its been for me.

I have the same model also....and did experience the same problems once upon a time! It sounds like your trouble might be in your coasting richer system. My trouble was in a few different places.. for one the head gaskit had a split in it between #2 and #3...changed that...a little better..so i put all new vacume lines on it and...better again, but still was acting strange......i then adjusted the clutch switch...better again...pulled out the distributor and had to replace it because the thing was shot.....all kinds of play in it! Now its really getting better...but still not right. Once i replaced the carb, that was it......runs great and has been for several years.Years ago i had a car that did the same thing and found out the cat converter was not any good. Good luck!Hope some of my trouble helps with some of your trouble!

The coasting richer solenoid is a good idea of a place to check. The switch on the clutch of one of my trucks was really mangled and would stick sometimes open and sometimes closed. If that solenoid is open the idle RPM will kick up a fair amount. As a test you could disconnect the solenoid at the carb and see what it does without it. I know it has something to do with emissions but whether it has any real effect on performance, mileage, or reliability is debatable. I ran my 79 with it bypassed for quite a while before I replaced that clutch switch and it didn't seem to do much except get rid of that little RPM bump with the trans in 3rd or 4th, clutch out, and foot off the gas.

I remember now what I did to help decrease the problem on my truck. When I took a look at everything I found that the points in the distributer were pretty old and worn. So I changed those and that helped a lot. Just a couple more pennies.

Hey thanks a lot guys. It seems the general concensus is that the carb is the culprit, which is kind of what I figured. I guess now would be a good time to pull it and do a rebuild. Thanks for the posts and if anyone has anymore ideas, please feel free to keep posting on this thread. Thanks again!
