From what I've heard, it's common for the horns to not work, anyone know WHAT it is that goes bad that needs to be fixed??? Any advice will be appreciated!

Even though this sounds obvious, make sure the horn istel is there.
The most typical thing I've heard of is the button wher eyou press behind the steering wheel cover. They dont hvae a replacment part. I wired a aftermarket button and mounted it near ignition switch.
I'm sure ther are some other people on there that wil have some
ideas on what you can do as well.

The wiring for the horn is pretty straight forward. You can test the horn independently by just putting a hot lead to it. If it honks, it works. The factory horn is adjustable I think, but good luck trying to tone tune it...

If your truck has an aftermarket steering wheel, this is probably the problem area. There is a small mounting board, sort of an old school circuit board mounted under the steering column. You'll need to remove the lower plastic column fascia to see it. There is a spring actuated push pin mounted on this board, there is some adjustment to the board by loosening it's mounting screws. I ended up actually bending the mount itself to get the pin to clear the aftermarket steering wheel adapter. The push pin rests on a copper disc that is attached to the column, check to make sure the copper disk is not all gunked up, and the pin moves in and out freely. Turn the steering wheel and watch to see if the pin binds or catches. If it does, you may need to bend the bracket to get it to clear. On mine, it would only hit in three spots where the aftermarket adapter bolts went into the column. It would give you a 12V DC bite once in awhile, which was good for a laugh but would make you bark every time...

After you've made sure this assembly is not binding and functioning properly, you'll need to check under the horn cap. There is a single wire that runs down through the steering wheel and connects to the pin assembly you were looking at earlier. When you push the horn button down, a contact on the horn pad closes the circuit and the horn honks. So, look at this wire, they are often worn and sometimes broken. Repair or replace as needed. It should be mounted to a tang, rivet or metal plate in the steering wheel. The horn pushbutton should be spring loaded so it holds the assembly apart. When you push it, the horn button makes contact with the rest of the circuit and it should honk.

Have fun, be sure to look at the wiring diagrams here on the site for your year truck. Some of them did use a relay in the circuit as well.

I have always had bad luck with the pecker-thing that transfers the ground current through. The pecker-thing never seemed to be long enough to touch the steering wheel ring. Prolly old and worn down. I even tried to take the spring out and stretch it so it pushed up farther... My horn still doesnt work half the time.

I believe my dad figured out how to remedy that, and not with a pill LARP...

But about the same size is a .22 shell... just make the neighbor's cat dance for a bit and put a shell over your little pecker thing... it should fit right?

on my '80 long bed the pin (or pecker thing) is part of the turn/bright switch on the column, which can be moved forward or back by losening the screws that secure the collar around the column

This is the same thing I did with my 80 4x4 and it worked for me as well...
