ok yesterday I took the luv out on the highway (first time ) sense I changed rear pumpkin gears... the truck used to be about 5 to 10 miles off on the free way I would say at about 80 on speedometer it would be running about 70/75 actual and just under 4k rpm... well now its off by a lot more then that , on the way to Portland it was pegged so say 90 to 100 and I know I was only doing about 70 and it was at about 4500/5000rpm so what did I do wrong?

The ring gear must have less (or more) :? teeth on it, right? Was it from a different year truck?

It just sounds like you went to a much lower geared ring.

you can do a general check... it wont be absloutely accurate, but it should get you close enough to take an educated guess as to what gear they are.

hold one tire, and mark the other tire. turn the driveshaft and count how many times you have to turn the driveshaft to get the wheel to go around one time.

Like I said, its not as accurate as counting the teeth, but it should help you to figure it out

a stock 79 should have a 410 geared rearend.

i could bet ya money that you put a 456 geared rearend in it.

one cool way (if you have not thought of it already) to check the accuracy of your speedometer is to get a hand held GPS. I had one I use on my sailboat. I have found that most of my vehicles are off a little bit
