Wow, that looks like a lot of work. The frame looks great, how did you clean off the rust? What did you use to paint it? Keep the pics coming :)

Thanks guys for all the words of encouragement. I know I have a ton of work to do, but I`m luvin it !

I have owned this truck for about 9 years. I have just recently started the restoration. I have most of the main componets to finish it. But I will still probably need a passenger door. I don`t know if it will turn out to suit me or not ? The stock engine and drive train are perfect and it runs and drives like new. It only had 69,000 miles when I got it.

This truck was driven to Ohio from California where it ended up in a Police impound lot. I got it from a lady who bought it at a Poilice auction. It was in near mint condition when she got it. But shortly after she got it, a drunk driver came down her street and ran into it while it was sitting in front of her house. Thats why i have to replace both fenders, hood and probably one door. It also had a bent upper A arm that I had to replace. But there was no other serious damage, it was all sheet metal. I put new tires and shocks on it, and had the front end alighned and now drives like new again.

I have been a Chevy Luv fan since March 10, 1979. Thats the date I bought a brand new 79 4x4, that I still have ! But, thats another story for another time.

I remove rust from the frame with a small air sander and paint it with POR15.

The original owner of this truck must have been a California surfer ? It still has Surfboard decals in the back window. And it must have spent a lot of time parked in the hot California sun on the beach because the interior is totally "fried". The dash is wiped out !

Shaunltd, I love your truck ! In fact I tried to buy it a couple of years ago when it was on ebay. I bid 4,500.00 on it and was high bidder, but of course that bid didn`t meet the reserve. I remember when my 79 4x4 looked like that, and I get a tear in my eye, lol. You don`t need a NOS spare tire and wheel for your truck do ya ? My 79 4x4 still has the original spare tire and wheel hanging under it. It has never been on the ground. But i`m sure the wheel is solid rust. It still has the Japanese BF Goodrich tire on it ! My truck is so rusty the wheel will probably fall out any day lol.

I have all the original paperwork on my truck including what was the equivalent of a window sticker. I can post pics of that stuff if anyone is interested ?

Yes, I am getting fired up about finishing my 80 2x4 project.

Thanks again to everyone.

Ike

This may be a trivial question, but I have noticed that some 79 and 80 LUV`s have the lettering on the tailgate painted black and some do not.

Is the black lettering part of the Mikado package? My 80 Mikado has the black lettering.

I think they were all black lettering except for the black trucks which I believe were white lettering. All the stock ones I have seen anyway. Hey Ike, did you get my PM about the winch? I know there has been some issues with PM's lately for some people. Drop me a reply when you get a chance.

I believe Mokadeth is correct, they all came from the factory painted, probably the ones you have saw not were repainted by someone (and to lazy to tape them off :smt040)

The reason I asked this is, There is a guy close to me who just restored his Dad`s Luv. He wants to sell it and I went to look at it and I asked him why the the lettering was not black and he told me it came from the factory like that and when he had it painted , he wanted it original and the lettering is yellow. He said his Dad bought the truck new and he knew for a fact the lettering was never black ? This truck is not a Mikado.

The truck is still beautiful. He was asking $3,500.00

Yes, you are probably right, but some odd ball things come down the assembly line sometimes.

I have a 94 S-10 that i special ordered new. It is the base truck with no options. The chrome grille was not an option on the base truck. When the truck came in, it had a chrome grille in it like the LS has. It was supposed to have a black grille like all the other cheap bodies had. I know it came from the factory that way because I was at the dealer when it came off the truck.

I still have the truck, and it still has the chrome grille in it.

Spring is here and I am getting back to work . I removed the carpet to see if it will clean up good enough to use again. I would love to find new carpet , but I want it to fit like the original and I don`t think that is possible ?

I just can`t get over how rust free this truck is. The floors are like new. The shifter and the boot are from my 79 4x4. I lucked out there because the boot is perfect !

Yes I am getting anxious to get back on this truck. I am hoping to have it painted so I can drive it in the local 4th of July parade this year.
But, I will need to stay on it !
