 Post subject: 4 Speed Tranny Pulling

I'm trying to pull the tranny out of my 2 wheel drive LUV without pulling the motor too. I need to change the clutch. I've got everything loose but it won't come out. There is a small gap at the bottom between the tranny and the motor but the top won't separate. I have not take out the clutch fork but everything else is loose or out. Anyone have any ideas? If I can't figure it out I'm going to get the motor ready and pull them together but I really don't want to for the sake of time. Help gang?

There is still one more very hard to reach bolt up at the 12 o clock position on the bell housing.

The starter is out? The sheet metal cover at the bottom is out?

Just throwing out ideas here, trying to help ya out.

Thanks, I think I got everything. I'll make sure on that bolt but I think we got it too. I guess I'm pulling the engine too.

There are 2 bolts right at the top of the tranny bellhousing that are a bitch to get to. The easiest way is to connect a bunch of 3/8 extensions together with a deep well socket so that there is enough flexibility and length in them to reach the bolts from the back of the tranny on top.

Make sure you have all of the bellhousing bolts out, the starter bolts out, the speedo cable and clutch cylinder/cable disconnected, the shifter removed, the tranny mounts disconnected and the engine is blocked up so it won't fall when the tranny is loose, and then pry evenly from opposing sides of the tranny between the bellhousing and the rear of the engine.

Once you have it apart, look at your flywheel and look for signs of hot/burn spots on it from the clutch slipping and scorching it, and excessive wear on the "fingers" that ride on the throw-out bearing. If it has a lot of them, it is best to replace them both too. Hot spots on a pressure plate or a flywheel will take the tempering out of either one and cause it to wear unevenly, plus excessive wear on the fingers will all cause you to have a weak clutch that leads to clutch "shutter" under a load.

Be careful when you remove the throw-out bearing that you don't damage or lose the little spring clips that hold it in - they are a real PITA to replace. If you don't have any bearing R&R tools, pressing the throw-out bearing off of the collar can be done easily by tapping lightly on the collar in the center of the bearing with a large proper-sized socket and a small hammer while the bearing is sitting on two small blocks of wood.

Replacing the bearing can be done by putting a block of wood under the collar and placing a piece of wood on top of the bearing to protect it and lightly tapping on it to drive it onto the collar.

Also, while the tranny is out, check it's front and rear seals for signs of leakage, and check your engine's rear seal for any signs of leakage too. They are simple to replace and don't cost much, and oil-soaked clutches and/or dry empty trannys don't last long.

You should have a free clutch alignment tool in the box with your new clutch - so when you tighten the new clutch/pressure plate down, make sure it stays precisely centered with the tool or you will have one helluva time getting the tranny back in.

If you lose any oil out of the tranny, now would be a good time to drain it and refill it with fresh 30 wt. engine oil (according to Isuzu spec's) which can be done by removing the plug on the bottom to drain it, then once you put that back in, you can refill it with a long piece of tubing on the end of a small funnel through the fill hole in the side of the tranny untill it starts to run back out, once you get the tranny back in.

all that and one more thing that i forget to do was the pilot bearing it is all out replace it to i got to put that in now and it is like $11.00 at napa man i was made at my self but yes it will come it just takes a bit of prying i am getting ready to do mine again to do the pita pilot good luck

The kit I bought has both the clutch and pressure plate and the bearings and an alignment tool. Do I need anything else?

Thanks Budbondo for reminding me about the pilot bearing. It should be replaced too.

A little trick I use to easily get it out is to fill the center of the bearing with lube or bearing grease, then put the end of the clutch alignment tool in the center and tap on it with a hammer. Driving the end of the alignmemt tool into the grease-filled center of the pilot bearing causes enough pressure to pop it out. Then just clean out the grease, and tap the new bearing in with a piece of wood and a hammer.

I hope all of this has been helpful for ya!

Harbor freight makes a neat little puller for pilot bearings, used it on the pilot bearing on my diesel LUV, won't fit in some FORD bearings though, I had to replace the clutch in an 85 once and I had to rip out the "guts" of the bearing and then the outside race with a slide-hammer gizmo a neighbor had.

A bit of PB blaster and a small mallet (rubber/leather) is always helpful for stubborn alignment pegs that won't let go, I've had to use one about every time.

I went through Checker auto and I got a Precision kit that had everything. It came with the pilot and throwout bearings and the pressure plate and clutch disk for about $90.00. If you have a Schuck's, Checker or Kragen close by you can go online to their web site and find your part, then print out that web page and take it to the store to buy your part. Usually I save at least ten bucks a trip if it's a fairly expensive part. I don't have photos but when I get where I can post web pages I'd be glad to if you need it. Thanks again.

A bit late, but I understand the trans comes out easier if you turn it on it's shaft axis when pulling it out. At least that is what I've seen here about the 4x4. Maybe someone else can add to this, it might make it easier to get it back in...
