ok I am picking up a 79 231 Saturday and plan on using a downey off road bell housing with a Toyota 5 spd , offy or elderbrock intake with twin side draft weber carbs (adaptor to 4 barrel intake) with mild cam so here are my question
1. What gearing would be good for at least 100/120 top speed and what rear end can I find it in
2. How do I make the speedometer work with the luv gauges?
3. What headers work with the luv?
4. If I use cable clutch bell housing can I use the luv cable or do I need to fab something

gears would depend on a few things, how many rpm,s you want to turn, and how much overdrive 5th gear has. Example=.825 5th gear with 3.50 rear gears turning 215/50-15's around 5000 rpm would be around 120mph

For a Speedometer, One interesting thing we have been doing with our waterski boats up here for a speedometer is using a hand held GPS mounted to the dash. Might be able to find the right unit and make a custom mount for it. Take advantage of a little technology. instead of figuring out how to calibrate the speedo. Just not going to work to good when you are running those logging roads at 120mph in your luv......

If you run the 245/50-15 with the stock luv 4.56 @ 6000rpm it would run 112mph If you used a 4.10 ratio it would run 114mph @ 5500rpm Hope this helps

Not to hi-jack the thread but I have a questoin about upgradin to a turbo on a 231. Is it a direct bolt on (turbo, manifold, etc) to the stock 231 or would I need to upgrade anything else? Thanks!

You could use a 3.42 ratio out of a diesel luv and keep the rearend and lug pattern the same.

Did you pick up the engine then? Is this an upgrade for your current truck, or are you building another one?
