Hi there, just bought a 76 L.U.V. this last week end and when bought not running. Got it home changed the points, condensor ,plugs, wires, coil, alt, thermostat. Damn that was loads of fun. lol. Anyways it's running rough and I thought previous owner wired cap wrong so I wired it clockwise and well lets say it ran like crap. Pulled cap and actually paid attention and saw it ran counter clockwise instead of clock wise. Flipped 3 and 2 around and hell what ya know ran. But now the famous by the sounds of it hicrappy secondary issue. As well the truck has had the coil hotwired to a switch to work. as well as the fuel pump to a second switch, hell got more switches then gorge bush at a truth telling convention. Anyways with the ignition system and fuel system off cranks over great. turn on fuel works great, turn on igntion works great... but when fuel gets pumped into carb by foot it goes and bogs down hard and does not want to turn over thus starter over heats etc. Disingage the 2 systems and cranks over fine after started cools. I can't seem to figure it out, what would cause the engine to bog down that hard on just a tid bit of fuel???? Have not officaly checked timeing yet. Also runs a tid bit better but still rough after all new items put in. If any one out there has got a idea on where to look please shoot me an e-mail. Thanks to all that can help out. Troy

I just went down somewhat the same road and I think from what you will find on here and I think most of the guys will agree..

1. Change the carb to Weber. The stock ain't worth spitting on. In fact I wouldn't waste a .50 Bullet on it. :) seriously. I'm not saying that's "The" problem your having but It very well could be part of the equation. Was for me.

2. I don't remember you mentioning changing your voltage regulator. Sounds like you did everything else in that circuit. If so that's the only thing left in that circuit you might have missed. Might as well since you did everything else.

3. And I had to clean the whole fuse panel very throughly. I would suggest that anyway, as you will want "ALL" your connections too be up to par to accurately troubleshoot electrical stuff. Recheck the wiring again and again if need be and seriously consider the Electronic Distributor conversion that these guys on here have done. That will eliminate the need for those stupid points etc.

4. Another note that probably isn't causing your immediate problem but since you just got the truck.... have you done a compression test? You might wanna do that soon before wrapping any more money in it so you really know what you have to look forward to.

Don't know if any of that will help. But check back everyday. It won't be long and some of the other guys on here will be jumping in with more thorough and maybe more detailed info for the immediate issue.
