If you eliminate the Catalytic converter on a 80 4x4 1.8 G180 what can happen good or bad?

Well most LUVs came without one, just the California models had them and those weren't until later 70's I think. So I can't see it as a bad thing to get rid of it. none of mine have any and I sure don't want one on either! All they do is get clogged up and need replacing.

That's what I figured and that's what I was hoping the general opinion might be :D I didn't want it on there either but just wanted a second opinion. Thanks again .....

Well, I used to think smog equipment was evil and couldn't wait to rip it off any car I had. But now-a-days, given the air quality here in SoCal, I'm not so hasty to remove it. Just my 2c.

I can understand where you are coming from Ben. I can't even imagine how the smog would be in the big cities if there weren't any emissions controls. But up here in the country where I live, It is no big deal. We don't even have emissions tests for my county. If the vehicle never came with it, then it isn't required. Now if I happened to have a California model over here and it had the converter on it, then I might have to keep it on. My only truck with the smog stuff still on is my nice stock one that is pictured in my avatar, but there is no converter. All I have ever got from emissions stuff is grief and expenses. My '97 S-10 is running bad now and the engine light is on. After switching the mass air flow sensor all I can think now is the converter is plugging up again. I already replaced it a couple years ago and it wasn't cheap. This time I am just going to see if I can have the ceramic busted out and the heck with a new converter. For that year truck it has to be there, but it doesn't necessarily have to work.

Hope I'm not too far off topic with this, but I've been looking at something like this for my Olds Custom Cruiser...

Price seems reasonable to me...

I just sent the seller a question asking if it would work with my S-10 and still be legal. If so for that cheap I would try one out. What the heck, the original GM coverter I had to buy last time cost more than my nice straight eBay front bumper!

I first found these while searching under 'honeycomb catalytic converter'. I learned about this technology through a fuel saving site, sometime back. They are supposed to flow quite well, so on a smaller 4 cylinder, backpressure might be a consideration. Other than that, it seems like a cost effective way to meet emissions requirements.

This seller offers a warranty also, which seems like a pretty confident statement to the durability and lifespan of the cat. Add to this 380+ feedback and still 100% rating, seems like it would be worth a try.

Haven't actually tried one myself, hope it works out for you. Let us know what you end up doing. Good luck :)

Well he wrote me back and said that they will work on an S-10 and he said he has used them on several. I might just buy one when I find out for sure if it is in fact my converter that is getting plugged again.

It is worth noting that techincally it is not legal to remove or disable any smog control parts regardless of if you have to be tested in your area or not. That said...

Backpressure is no problem for a luv without a cat like all the non-cali models, so it shouldn't be an issue at all to replace it with a high flowing one.

Well I guess that is what I meant when I said the smog stuff that came with a vehicle has to be there, just not necessarily have to work. If you don't have to be emissions tested and at inspection the converter is there then you will pass. If I remove my converter from my S-10 myself and knock out the ceramic from the inside and replace it, would that cause any problems with the operation of the vehicle? As long as I can have it running smoother with no other problems and still pass normal inspection then that is what I am looking for. Hopefully someday in the future the LUV will be restored and I won't have to worry about the emissions crap!
