Well here's a humble question....but first a little explanation.

I may want to change the color of the whole truck, including the Interior. We'll call this a partial restoration on my daily driver/work truck.

However I am a bit afraid to remove the I.E. stock headliner because it's in good shape and I may damage it or never get it back perfect.

It's seems too be made out of some kinda of plastic or vinyl. Is there some type of paint and or proper process for changing the color of any or all the plastic and vinyl pieces of Interior trim, maybe even the dash etc. that will not only look good but actually stick to it correctly.

I don't want it to look good for 2 months and have all the paint flacking off of all the new painted plastic parts; in other words... stand up to future srubbing and cleaning efforts? Then there's the feeling sticky result if the wrong combination of paint and part are combined. Hope that question made sense.?

Thanks for any tips you guys might have on this!! :) I.E. Any particular products any of you have used to accomplish the same efforts that worked really well for you.?

I would use the paint. I needed a black seat belt holder but ended up repainting a brown one black. it is very durable stuff. I f you attempt to remove the headliner you will tear it like ctmandu said. I took one out of a 76 and installed in my 72, but that was 20 years ago. They seem to be a lot more brittle with age.

I repainted a dash and seatbelt covers in an S-10 with the Duplicolor vinyl stuff, worked great.

I've also used this same product on grilles. It's really durable and flexible, so it doesn't chip like spray paint does. Just make sure you clean the grille really well, so it adheres properly...

I think its a matter of preference, but you could just take the old one out and use it as a template and cut out a new headliner.

I think LUVrv8 painted his headliner black. It looks great.

If you are worried about it sticking use a clear adhesive promotor first and then paint it
I have also used the vinyl dye you mix and spay with an air gun. Wored great on vinyl seats.
Wal Mart also sells a paint for plastic that has a built in adhesion promotor. Not sure but I think it is fusion paint for hard plastic.

I painted the door handles, sun visors, and some other parts on mine years ago. I'm surprised how well it holds up. I recommend it.

Those of you that have applied the bedliner materials to the floor of the cab or any other part of your trucks ......Did you spray it on or roll it on?? I'm not very familiar with the characteristics of that material, so I don't wanna buy the roll on stuff at wal-mart and do it myself if that method produces a poor coating.

Hey "79luv'r" I know you did it in your floor what did you use?

I used Hurculiner I got at Pep Boys. I rolled it on and it is ok for a budget. The gallon can was perfect with just a little left over. I went up the back of the cab to the bottom of the window.

For the interior I didn't want to spray on a Rhinoliner or other, because I didn't want it that thick. Two coats with a roller and brush and I am happy with it.

This is exactly what I cant to to with my truck. How did you prep the cab? I am thinking that a light scuff with 400 grit, and a wipe with denatured alcohol would do the trick. Also, how long ago did you do it and how well is the 2 coats holding up? Do they come in any different colors that charcoal?

I was thinking of doing the bottom in a dark smoky gray. The kick panels in gray/red fleck stone. I am gonna reupholster the bench seat in a gray that matches the fleck stone on the kick panels with a red vinyl stripe the is about 1 foot wide up the middle of the seat and back (in line w/ the hump). I have a crack in the dash that I want to shave down and fill w/ a filler. Then paint the whole dash with the same gray/red fleck stone that that is in the kicks.

I am not sure what to do with the doors. It is a combination of metal, vinyl, and carpet in a sun bleached red. :?

What I bought only came in black. I did a couple of months ago and took it out to the desert once since then. It's holding up well, just hard to clean. You can hose out the bed of a truck, but I don't want to do that to my cab.

The kit came with some scotch bright pad to scuff with. I also used my pneumatic sander. Sanding and cleaning was the hardest part. Nothing is flat and a lot of nooks and crannies. I think I used Acetone for cleaning. The instructions gave a couple of choices to use. I had to get that separately.

Good luck.

I used Duplicolor spray, lots of it. Surface prep is key, I washed it thoroughly, then used mineral sprits, followed by acetone... in a well ventilated area.

Used the same spray on my front bumper, takes a full week or so to cure completely, but when it does it's very durable.
