Easiest to install, least amount of problems but most compatible.

I have an 80 4x4 that runs great. I too would like to know anything about the rear end that would help provide a little more low rpm torque.

OK you guys here is my tip and i have already priced the parts to get started.

I am going to(i hope) to use a S-10 2.8 ,700R4,and full size trk. 208 transfer case(puts drive shaft on the right side) A 4.3 would work to.

This will give more power without tearing up the axles and a overdrive.

Some specs. are 3.06 fist gear,.72over (i think) and the transfer has a 2.8 low gear ratio.

Carb or injection will work as the injection system is easy to transfer from the S10 to the LUV by just adding an inline fuel pump for the fuel system.

No offence meant...but IMHO the 2.8 is a POS and one of the worst engines ever bult by GM.

If I was going for simple-to-install max hp/torque from a 4-banger, I guess I'd use a 2.6 with an older 2.3 carb intake, and switch to a newer rearend/transmission combo out of a mid to late 80's 4X4 Pup or Trooper.

The 2.6 is a much more reliable engine than the S10's 2.8...that is for darn sure.

And replacing a 4 speed with an automatic in a 4X4 should be considered blasphemy....lol.

(But then I would probably never build up a 4X4 Luv either...IMHO it's too much bother and I prefer to do my hell raising on pavement.)

I agree, I have heard them mostly referred to as "boat anchors". Had one in my S10 blazer and I hated it, no power at all, never got to use my AC because I like to driver faster than I can walk.

There's a local car auction place here called Whitey's (http://www.whiteysauction.com/) that auctions off older used cars to the public that most local used car lots won't take as trade-ins because they are too rough looking/running, or that have been donated by an estate after someone died, or that have been repo-ed or impounded.

Just about every S10 Pickup or S10 Blazer that shows up there is sportin' a 2.8 and no one ever bids much on them. If they bid on them at all...it sure ain't for the 2.8 engine....lol

I'm currently running an Impulse G200z 1.9 with a mild cam in my truck, and when it starts getting tired, I'm going to put a 2.6 with a 2.3 carb intake in it.

With the right cam, it should be one helluva fun truck to cruise around in.

Yep I agree on the 2.8. The 4.3 is the best but expensive to build on. If I rebuild a 4x of my own it would be with my 2.6 I still have hear and stay with the isuzu 5 speed.
V8 4x'x are a lot of work. i have seen 2 here in my area. Still have the option of buying one for 3,000.

The way gas is going I am seriously thinking about giving up on my V8 79 and getting into a gas saver area. Looking into Nissan's and Toyos also.
My 93 dodge is killing me to drive.

Does the 2.6 have power though? Like, enough?

Oh, and, will my transmission bolt right on? And will my rear end be strong enough for it?

will be enough and yes the 2.6 should bolt to the tranny. We put the 5 speed in behind his 1.8 just for the extra highway gear. The 1st gear was actually a little more quicker than the stock 4 speed.
never got around to the engine swap because he had a new 1.8 with a weber so I have the 2.6 here.
Wished it wasn't so damn much to ship to someone far away cause it was gonna go cheap.

Yea, I'd love to get a 5-speed.

I have a Weber on my 1.8 and it is crazy slow, as it chooses more or less.

Sometimes its rather peppy, other times its slow as hell.

The transmision bolts right to the stock 1.8 L. I put a 5 speed out of a trooper in mine. However I cut out one of the stock crossmembers and had the two plates welded to my frame, so I could use the removeable crossmember from the trooper.

Here's a link to that in the Drivetrain upgrade:

A Luv with a 5 speed and a built 2.6 would be one wicked 4-banger truck...that is for sure. If someone wanted to figure it all out...you could even go with fuel injection, or possibly even add a turbo.

From what I've seen, there is enough high performance parts available for the 2.6 to build a pretty strong runner...and it would probably give a few mini-trucks with V6's a darn good run for their money.

The power-to-weight ratio would sure be in your favor, because a 2.6 doesn't weigh much more than a 1.8 - and a 5 speed doesn't weigh much more than a 4 speed.

In a 2WD stepside...it would no doubt be quick while still getting decent gas mileage.

The 2.6 is a 4 banger?

Holy hell. I did not know that. I figured it was a V6, like the 2.8...

Yeah and stuffing a built one under your hood with a 2.3 carb intake would still look very much like a stock G180 1.8. And it would double your hp/torque...or more.

The main reason I'm wanting to do it is that most of my existing stuff would hopefully adapt over easily, it will bolt right up to my 5 speed in my 78 2WD stepside without much modding, and I would still get pretty decent gas mileage without gaining very much additional weight.

I've got a few more things to sort out first like what distributor/ignition module to use (and how to wire it up), what fuel pump I can use, etc. - but it definitely looks like it can be done.

So come spring time 2008 - you all can expect to see me cruising in the Tazmobile version II - with an even bigger, better, and more powerful 4-banger than it has now.

And of course with much more chrome...lol

What about for an older LUV, what combo would fit with minimal work in a '75?
