Um hey guys I'm getting a whole lot of smoke after installing the new weber and removing the smog pump and Cali's emission crap. It is "White" smoke. Did I mention ALOT. :(
Any Ideas? 8O

Install the smog pump and see if it clears up. Did you do the obvious "sniff" check? Could be running a tad rich. Personally, I would reattach the smog gear, replace the plugs with eith Bosch or NGK "V"'s, and take out on the road and run her pretty hard. A lot of smoke makes me think your combustion is off, or you are burning oil.

Yea the lack of fire was because of the fuse box and old faulty wiring. But cleaned it up got her done. :)

I have Bosch plugs already. Awww man dang, wow..I took all the emissions stuff off I hope I don't have to put that back on. :(

It's probably the burning oil thing :( We'll see, more to do on it tomorrow :)

Too rich is black smoke, oil burning is blue, white usually means water or moisture. If it doesn't clear up after it warms up I would suspect water is getting into the engine. Changing the carb should not effect this unless the intake manifold was removed/replaced. The gasket for it has water passages involved there. Hope it is nothing, or something simple.

Thought of something else. Water runs within the intake manifold. If you find nothing else, remove the carb and look carefully for any cracks or signs of water in the area of the carb mounting studs.

Any possibility it's a blowby problem? Maybe post some photos of your engine with smog stuff removed?

Sounds like a head gasket to me, but it might be something that got re-connected incorrectly.

My '78 was smoking white after sitting for a couple of weeks without being run. I found that the intake tubes for the AIR system in the head were all loose. It took about 1/2 an hour at idle, after I sealed them back up, before it stopped smoking...

Good luck ...

white smoke is water vapor, or it could be raw fuel vapor. black smoke means its running rich, blue smoke means its burning oil. hope this helps.

I'll try to get some pics soon.

There isn't much to have reconnected the only thing left was the hose going from the valve cover to one three small tubes coming from the intake right under the carb between the intake and block actually pointing at the block. And, the Vacuum advance hose is hooked up.
Everything else is plugged or capped off.

Keep the smog stuff till you sort things out. Don't just chuck it either.

I desmog all of my trucks. three of them now. every time i remove the egr valve under the intake manifold the passage way is plugged solid with black carbon. i would guess that most people with the egr still intact it is not working anyway. the other half of the smog stuff its the smog pump that pumps air into the exhaust right when it exits the head. not actually sure what this does. the only other thing the smog system had is a lot of vacuum hoses and after 20 plus years i would think that it has developed some vacuum leak. most of my truck run better when I take the smog off.

Yea that's about what I figured however as I arrived further into this project I've found other issues and I think they're all adding up to an Engine rebuild. I'm about to post a new thread where in I'll post the results of my compression test :( I'll title it "Results of my compression Test" lol Imagine that :)
