I did the search and found nothing honest. I have a stock 79 2/wd and the stock carb secondaries don't open. I can open them with a screwdriver so the flapper is free but it does not open at high RPM's. What's wrong. I know I should have a webber on it but cash flow out is higher than cash flow out at the time being.

Stock luv carb secondaries are operated by vacuum.

make sure vac line is hooked up correctly.
if vac line is working and they are still not working the rubber diaphram that operates the secondaries might be broken or rotted.

get a parts diagram for the carb out of the luv repair manual it will show you were the diaphram is located
Good luck

dont mean to steal the post but, on that same note, i have all my vacuum lines plugged, so is there an easy way to convert it to manual secondaries?

thanks Taz. got busy coaching my sons baseball team. three seasons in a row. working on an 80 longbed with an oil leak, lowered with some 17" toyota FJ wheels hopefully it will run this weekend. i'll drive it buy if i get it running.

never tried to convert vac secondaries to mechanical. theoretically possible although you might have to fabricate some linkage. although i suspect fuel milage would suffer. that is the advantage of vac secondaries. they only open when you need them,

if you try to make them mechanical I would say don't have them, kick in until you are at 60 to 70% throttle. and when you get tired of the stock carb you can always buy the webber

or just unplug one of those vac lines...

Works for me Dan...Holla first to make sure I'm here. You're welcome at my personal castle of clutter anytime.

Guys...when you are hooking up a vacuum hose to anything under the hood - make sure you know whether it is manifold vacuum or not.

As for replacing the carb's vacuum diaphram - if nobody close to you has a junk stock Luv carb laying around - head to your local boneyard and start hunting. The POS crappy Hitachi carb was used a lot on quite a few japanese -made vehicles in the 70's-80's, so hopefully you can find the parts you need there.

If you lived closer, I'd rummage around and find the box that I threw a few old junk stock carbs in and give it all to ya.

BTW..the best way to get a weber pretty cheap is to bid on a used one on ebay. They are always on there, usually come with the adapter plate, air cleaner and all, and most of them work just fine - plus if they don't, a rebuild kit can be got off of ebay real cheap too. The 32/36 model is the one you want - preferrably with the electric choke.

When I bid on my first one a long time ago, I decided to bid on a whole bunch of them to make sure I would get one cheap enough, (not realizing it was a holiday week-end and no one else was apparently bidding), and when I got back home from the holiday, I had won a bunch of them...lol

A while back, I gave Ben a folder with all of the detailed and precise info about every last carb weber has ever made and he has been gracious enough to host it for all of us to download for free. It's in the information section that you can get to by following the link on the front page of this site.

While you are there, snoop around - there's some real great and useful info there painstakingly supplied by all of the members here.

someone asked earlier in the thread about mechanical secondaries on a stock carb. I was just doing a rebuild on a stock carb for a 1974 luv. I notice that the lever that opens the primarys does not let the secondaries open until about half throttle. It look like you could connect the lever arm(red arrow) to the round button(Green arrow) and that would allow the secondaries to open manually form 1/2 throttle to full throttle.
