I show 1.19 - 1.43 gallons (4.5 - 5.4 litres) as min/max in my Isuzu Workshop Manual for the G180Z in my '83 I-Mark.

Do the Luvs recommend a drain plug washer-type gasket like the Isuzus.

I think they take 5 qts. :?:
You would think I would know this for sure with 3 of them out side.

Oh well.... the memory is starting to go. It's at least 5 or 5 1/2.

I think they put 4 in mine when the garage services it. I know the maximum is more than 5, but do you really want to go over 4 and approach the maximum. I put 5 in my one truck when I changed the oil myself. I thought about asking this same question before, hopefully we get a correct amount so we aren't screwing anything up.

4.5 US quarts...filter and all.

But why wouldn't you just fill it untill it shows it's full on the dipstick???

Thanks for the info taz, didn't really give the dipstick a thought duh! . I am sure 4 or 5 then is not going to hurt anything.

True. Because a very used 4WD, or very lowered 2WD might only take 3 depending on the size of the dent in the oil pan. 8O

I like knowing. Thanks Taz.

On the '78, the dipstick is not entirely believable, I don't know if it's air pressure or what. It reads about right on the 3rd or 4th try...

(This was something I learned from Mrs. ctmandu actually :) )

Here's my theory about the Luv's odd dipstick readings and the need to check the dipstick several times:

After careful examination of the Isuzu G180 and G200 engines and the design of the standard Luv oil pan, IMHO while the engine is running with the dipstick in the tube, somehow the oil is drawn out of the dipstick tube and an air pocket apparently forms around the end of the dipstick tube.

Once the engine is stopped, and the dipstick is removed from the dipstick tube and re-inserted into the tube, the air pocket dissipates allowing oil to slowly flow up into the tube sufficiently to allow an accurate measurement of the true and exact volume contained in the oil pan.

Depending on the viscosity of the oil, the temperature of the engine and oil, and the length of time that elapsed since the last oil change (and the amount of contaminates in the oil), this process may need to repeated several times to get a final consistent and accurate reading.

And from my observation, the amount of time that has passed since the engine was last running seems to have little or no effect on this.

I have personally pulled dipsticks out of Luv engines that had not been started for a very long time, only to discover that they were giving me a false reading that indicated the engine contained very little oil, and once the dipstick was re-inserted several times, it was possible get a more accurate reading showing actually that the engine did in fact contain way more oil then the first attempt indicated.

I have no idea why, (assuming they were even aware of this...lol), that either Chevy or Isuzu didn't immediately find some way to correct this.

But I do know that every Luv that I have thus far come in contact with has verified that it is something that does happen.

Having owned an Imark, a Pup, and an earlier version of a Luv (pre-1975), I can also tell you from my personal experience that it apparently doesn't happen with them.

It seems to be only the '76 to '82 Luv engines with the standard Luv G180 oil pan that have this problem.

So there you have it folks...that's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

(Untill somone else here proves otherwise - of course...lol)

Makes sense to me. Taz.
I bought oil today and found these handy 5 QT jugs. Pretty cool.

I put 4 Qts into the 80 LUV today while doing an oil and lube, and the stick was dry, like you said. I dumped the last QT in, and now it's a bit too high. I bet putting the dip stick in and out those couple of times is what it needed like you said, Taz.

I asked the same question recently as I experienced the same thing. My book called for over 5 which I thought was alot. I thought there may have been a typo or something in the book. "EGG" who is another member on here told me 4.2 So I went with that.

Through the whole thing I went through what your describing; trying to get it right on the good ole dipstick. I began suspected the possibility of what Taz has suggested and agree. Especially now that I know I wasn't going crazy lol.

I can't prove it either but it seems like that's what's happening. I think he's right. Good luck :)

ugotluv...10/40 in the engine and 30 wt engine oil in the transmission is what the book says.

I personal use the Castrol high mileage oil.

(BTW... any mileage that the Luv racks up while I'm driving is pretty much "high mileage". )

Now be a good Luv owner and save some of your half-rack $$ for a Haynes manual.
