I just finished putting a new clutch in my truck. My throw-out bearing went through the pressure plate. Not the easiest job in the world, but next time should go a lot faster. Now I know that the easiest way to do it is to pull the motor, tranny, and transfer case all at once. Then you can change the clutch in front of the truck, then put it all back at once. Of course I am talking about a 4X4. The oil pan makes it impossible to do the job by just pulling the motor.

Good to know. Thanks. And glad you got it done.

I pulled just the trans out on a 2X4 once. I will always pull the eng. and maybe the eng. trans. together from now on. Just the trans was a pita.

Yep me too pulled them separately and will never do that again....and another scenario on that note: Don't you have to pull the motor just to remove the Oil pan on a 4x4 just to get to Oil pump???

My truck is acting funny. I dont know if its the clutch or the tranny. When you get it in the higher gears and give it alot of gas it will rev up and just kinda roll but if you ease off the gas a bit it will go on and pull fine. What do you guys think tranny or clutch? Another question is how do you grease the throwout bearing.

Yes, you need to adjust the clutch cable. On an 80 you remove the snap ring keeper at the firewall, engine side. There are a series of groves there for adjustment. Put it in a grove that allows about 1/4 inch of play when you pull on the cable. Cable too tight and the clutch slips, too loose and it won't release properly (gears will grind, hard to shift).

You dont need to pull the motor to do the clutch.

Just take the box out and leave the motor in.

Thats the way to do it.

Take the new pilot to a bolt shop. Get a bolt thats a snug fit inside the bearing. I think its better if you cut the thread off and just use the shank of the bolt.
Pack the hole in the end of the crank behind the bearing full with grease then smack the bolt in. That will push the bearing out, then you just wipe the grease out.

That is one of the oldest tricks for getting the pilot bushing/bearing and is still the easiest one .Good work there Bob as a lot of people forget that one. :smt023

Ive got an old input shaft to use for a manual one if i ever get one that wont come out with the slide hammer.

I had to make one up for the auto type bush. They are tight bastards to get out. Its just a bit of brass bar thats close to the right diameter, it had half a hole drilled in it so i drilled it out and tapped a thread and screwed a head bolt in it. Works a treat.
