305s due to there small bore used 58cc heads and flow a lot better than the 283 heads witch were also 58cc and the power pack heads only flowed 85cfm intake and exhaust.

Oh and you can find 307s in a lot of pickups from the mid 60s to the late 70s.

Just for some info a friend of mine would only race the 307s(circle track) as he could pin the throttle to the floor and not blow them up (but he wore them out)This little motor got him 5or6 championships in a row including a big win in a class above him and when the protested him and tore it down they found what he knew--it had a burnt valve man was everybody staning around with dumb looks on there face LOL

Oh and vortec heads are 64-67ccs they would work but you would still be at the stock comp.

I have a rebuilt 307 in my basement that I had in my 80 luv. Had good heads and mild street cam and edelbrock intake. Little truck ate up the pavement.
Gotta find a use for it someday or deal it away.

It certainly looks like a SBC. I think the trans is a short-shaft TH350 too, but I don't actually know what a TH400 looks like. I asked the guy to check on numbers for me. He's totally not a car guy, this was in his garage when he bought his house. I asked him to look at the head w/no cover, should be numbers right there, right? Can you see the block number on the back with the tranny mounted? Man, it's been a long time since I messed with this stuff... :D

Hotrod80 is correct.
Th400 has a square tranny pan.
Th350 has square tranny pan with one corner lobbed off,so to speak.

Does anyone out there have photos of the way they mounted the radiator w/short shaft water pump? What I'd like is a photo of the front lower crossmember BEFORE the radiator is in place. On my truck, the top bulkhead has been cut, but not cleanly. The good thing is that there is room to trim it back like it should be. Pics of that would be useful, too. Also if anyone is running a shroud, I'd be curious what you are using.

Found one of these new locally, for a decent price.

http://streetortrack.com/Northern-19-RA ... 21440.html

Is this enough radiator for a street 350? Dimensionally it's the same as the Howe unit outlined in the V8 swap.

Thanks guys, I'm trying to chart this out before I start buying stuff. I feel a plan coming together...

Thanks hotrod80, very educational. You've got a really nice truck there, hope I can come close to putting something together as clean as yours.

Got some numbers off the small block pictures I posted earlier, Mortec matches these up to a 350...

3970010 (block) - '69 327 / '69-80 350 (2 or 4 bolt)
333882 (heads) - '74-80 76cc (1.94/1.50)

Nothing stellar, and it will probably need a rebuild, but I'm excited anyway. If anyone knows anything 'special' about this combo, please let me know. If it stinks, I'd like to know that too...

I haven't seen it yet, but I'd guess it's probably a 2 bolt main with smog heads. I'll get better pictures next week.

Looks like I've got my engine and trans :)

Is there a (single?) book out there that you folks would recommend for building a 350? I've got several chilton's and so forth for a plethora of vehicles, and a factory Olds manual for the '85, but I'm looking for something that would walk me through the inspection process as I disassemble my engine. What to look for, what tools I'll need, etc. I know there are a lot of SBC books out there, I'd like to hear what you guys recommend.

The target is a mild/stock engine, probably a 2bbl initially. Maybe a Q-jet if that's all I can get my hands on. If I don't HAVE to do anything to this engine besides freshen it up, I'm not going to, but I'd like to know that I at least inspected and assembled it properly before I try to make it run.

I still need to acquire exhaust manifolds, distributor, starter, intake, carb, radiator, eng/trans mounts, front disc brakes, and some sort of improved wiring. Plus there is the cost of buttoning up the exhaust system when it's ready to move on it's own.

What do you guys use to figure final drive ratios and such? This truck is not intended to be a race vehicle, but a reliable daily driver. How do I figure out which combination to use for decent power, cruising speed (above 60!) and fuel mileage? Torque motor, high gears, right? There's a set of 3.00 8" gears on ebay now, also the mini-spool locker thing. Where does that put the stall converter in the equation?

I'd like to get at least 15mpg with this truck, and be able to cruise at 70+ without worrying about throwing a rod from here to Vegas. Since the TH350 is only a 3 speed, what's the best way to get there? Am I being realistic?

Well, I just drove 7 hours and put about $70 worth of gas in the Oldsmo-hog. For this...

Image Image

You guys already know what it is...what I didn't tell, is that it was the same price as the truck. Free!... 8)
Just the cost of gas, but I did have to put new lights on the neighbor's trailer before I could use it. A couple of hours and $26.99 for that...

Image Image
Image Image

So, that's two for two (not counting 'shipping'...hahaha). Not a bad start...

To keep it all in perspective, my 2 year old son drew a picture of himself to give me when I got back today...

Image

He's even wearing brown!

Pretty sure that this engine/trans is just a core. Anybody got a way to check compression on a pulled engine?

Great picture and a nice score for free . David Vizzard writes good books on budget small block Chevy horsepower using exsisting factory parts .

Your goal of 15 mpg is achievable . Stay low on the gear , as suggested 2.73 to 3.25 to 1 , run a tight converter 220-2400 max if not stock , build the motor to make good torque . You might jack up the rear of the truck and check the gear that's in it . 3.00 to 1 was probably the most common gear for 65-68 mustangs . which is more than likely where the rear axle came from as they are the same width as a factory Luv axle .

I ordered these two books for starters:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/091265 ... 12-6378306

http://www.themotorbookstore.com/turbo- ... c-350.html

Thanks hotrod80. I'm going to try to get the truck in the garage today, but I have a long to do list.

Will the engine be OK under the tarp on the trailer for a week? I've got nowhere to put it at the moment...ack..

Will this type manifold work? Or does it need to be a center dump? This looks like it would clear the frame better, but I don't know how close to the firewall it might be...

I don't think they will clear the frame.

Does anyone have photo of their V8 truck from the bottom? Like from a pit or on a lift?

I don't have another truck nearby to look at, and I'm going with manifolds, so clearance is an issue. I don't want to buy something I can't use. I think I'll see if sokoji is planning to use the manifolds he had on the truck. If not, I'll see about buying those. At least I know they fit..

From looking at what I've got here, I'm still trying to figure out the trans mount too. Not the frame portion, but the actual trans to frame mount. I think it's just a stock item, but I can't seem to picture how it goes together with what's welded on the frame.

Thanks!
