Hi all,

Just joined up today.

I have a 1980 automatic (cant remember the engine # right now) but its been sitting un used for about a year and a half. I want to move it to the driveway. I put a bit a gas in carb and it started right up FIRST TRY..I love this truck anyway after it burns the fuel up it dies. I have done the following with no results and before I start taking stuff apart wanted to hear some thoughts as to what else I might try.

Added gas to the carb
yes, it has gas in the tank
blew out the fuel line from the carb to the tank
added gas to the fuel line in hopes to prime it or create suction.
Battery is good
I also disconnected the fuel line and cranked it but NO fuel came out.
Everything else is fine on the truck and the last time I drove it it worked fine.

This is what has me confused. the fuel filter (see through) on the frame in front of the tank under the driver side. has NO fuel in it. theres a good 3 gallons of fuel in the tank right now. I had some additive in it when I parked it and started it about 7 months ago.
Having no gas in the filter I fear its the fuel pump 8O isn't it located in the tank?
My next step if I can get around to doing it today is to disconnect the line comming into the filter.

Your thoughts will be appreciated thank you
J.P.

If it is electric fuel pump it is located in front of the fuel tank on a cross frame rail , just behind the cab under the bed on the drivers side.

There is also a fuel pump relay that some folks on here have had trouble with I think, but I have not so I know nothing about it. Look in the information section of the website at the wiring diagram or in your manual and see if you can find some info on the fuel pump relay. Or search some of the old posts for info on it.

I would suspect the pump or the relay.

Thanks guys I will give it a try and post the outcome. I'm getting ready to go through it again and take the non-op off so I can drive it again but first I have to get it to the work area.

Work has been slow so I thought I would do it now and of course as soon as I dive into it I get 3 calls today..oh well. Darn work.... always getting in the way of my projects. I guess I shouldn't complain after all it could be worse, I could be living out of the back of the truck 8O

Thanks again.
BTW the end result of this truck is going to be flatbed with dual wheels. My work truck is a 79 Chevy 1 ton flatbed dump with a 454 and the LUV is going to be its mini-me..

I have a 1980 truck and have had to replace relay. Relay is under a panel on pass side of truck on bottom side. It is It is about centered on the inside fender under hood. Replacement instructions are on forum. Search under my name for wiring info. Easy to replace with aftermarket part. Original just not available. Wouldn't recommend a jy one. Just a note. The pump only runs when the ignition switch is in start or the alternator is operating. There is a single wire with a connector just ahead of relay cover that you can unplug to keep starter from engaging when switch is turned to start. Then you can hear the fuel pump run and check for fuel at carb.

Try giving the fuel pump a couple taps with a hammer. Sometimes old varnished fuel will cause them to stick.

The fuel pump works off the back of a charging alternator.

If the alternator wont charge the pump wont work.

Dont move it up to the engine bay. Thats where i put the fuel pump on my 86 pup, it wont suck enough fuel so when your getting serious with the right foot the carb runs dry. It needs to be at the tank so it can push the fuel to the carby.

Check the pump still works by hotwiring ti straight to a battery. If it works then trace the wiring to see why its not getting power.

Basic Luv electrical troubleshooting is to first clean all of the connections in your fuse box under the hood. That is where 90% of all Luv electrical problems come from. Once you've done that, then check all of your grounds.

If you don't do that first, you will be pulling your hair out trying to figure out what the hell is wrong.

Thanks guys I just had to move it 50' so after taping on the fuel pump and a quick visual check of the wires I just put a little gas in the carb and drove it to its destination a few feet at a time.. I will address the real issue when I start to tear into it.

I replaced the fuse panel on this truck with an off the shelf one many years ago... I honestly cannot remember how that came about but I will post a pic if anyone is interested in seeing it. There is NOT much to it at all

Good tip about the alternator I will be sure to check that when it comes time.

So next step is to remove the bed and start the dual wheel process. I will post these issues in the proper forum. Id like to do a photo log of the process.

Thanks again

Something like this????

86 4x4 space cab.

It was a bit dark and i took em with the camera in my phone.

The track match is A1 so it should handle like a bought one. Only worry ive got is the chassis join. Its not an easy thing to get approved down here. That and the lack of park/emergency brakes at the wheels.

Was going to be for the 2x4 but for $300 i couldnt go past buying the 4x4. Im going to use 2.6L running gear. I would actually like ti use a later post 88 chassis, for the bigger front diff and brakes. Will see if i can find one.

Its a work truck, i was going to V8 or V6 the 2X4, i would do it to the 4x4 but the trans and transfer case would send me broke.

Picked up the diff wheels springs and that bit of the chassis for $275. Its the same ratio as a 1 ton Isuzu and its out of an Isuzu truck.
