I just started noticing a weird noise coming from somewhere under my truck. If I am sitting at a redlight truck running foot on the brake with the transmission in gear any gear. I start getting a weird noise it sounds like a squeaky rattle mixed with a fluid squirting sound. I know that probably doesnt say a whole lot but the noise is weird nothing like I have ever heard before I cant really think of any better way to describe it. If the truck is running in park or neutral it doesnt make the noise. Any way the truck has a 327 in it with a th-400 trans and a 2500rpm stall converter 2 not 1 trans coolers. The truck is loud so I cant exacly pin point the noise and I dont exactly trust my girl friend to sit in it while its in gear while I go crawling under it. so if you have any ideas of what could be the problem I would really appreciate hearing from you.

I would check the flexplate, they are prone to cracking around the crank flange. It never hurts to check the fluid level either :smt023

Fluid level seems to be fine that was the first thing I checked and rechecked after the noise started. I let the truck run for a few minutes and ran the shifter through all the gears to make sure all the pumps had fluid before checking the fluid and hopefully make sure that fluid had circulated into both coolers. I probably have less than 50 miles on the truck since I put the motor together everything checked out normal as far as visually inspecting the flex plate. The trans doesnt appear to be leaking any fluid and seems to work fine just noisy at stop lights.

Never even thought of a u joint. Is it possible for a u joint to make noise if the truck isnt moving? What kinds of noises does a bad u joint make and how can I check it with out taking it to a drive line shop?

A u joint won't make any noise when stopped. Well, except for clunk. That's when the u joint and drive shaft hit the ground. 8O

My truck idles a little high so if it was running around 1000 rpms in gear while stopped is it possible the slightly higher Rpms are putting just enough pressure on the drive shaft to make noise even though the truck isnt moving? I know the sound of a completly broken u joint I might have done that once or twice

would the converter make any weird noises if there was something wrong with it? The converter was fine with the old motor but would it be possible if something didnt seat in right when I installed it? This project is the first time I didnt have someone around that has more experiance than me.

Have you checked the clearance and made sure you starter was fully dissengaging? I had a similiar noise that ended up being my starter and it wouldn't make the sound in park either. I think the rpms was the difference.

I had my starter in and probably 10 times the day I got the truck running with some shiming issues I havent checked to see if it is disengaging or not but maybe after it cools down below 100* outside I will have to take a look.

It's still hot up there? We are cooled off nice since Wednesday. It was about 80 in Long Beach today.
