After my rebuild, back in january or so, the truck ran great, with a little valve noise, to where it wasn't really noticable.

now its freaking annoying, it squeeks and is soooo loud when you get on it, or your just idling at a stop light.

any solutions? we adjusted the valves the way the haynes manual said and we tightened them with enough torque. soo, what could it be? thanks guys

it sounds like its not really getting enough lubrication maybe?

or maybe some lifters came loose and are tapping on the cam?

my dad moved over to indiana and im in WA state, so he can't really help me on this one now. lol

The only thing I can think to do is readjust them, but I am afraid i would screw something up, not adjust them with feeler gauges right, over tighten them, loosen them too much.

I would feel better if someone else messed up my truck. not me. hahaha

but it sounds like squeeking, but it could be tapping or rubbing, or smashing. maybe even knocking?

Take the valve cover off and then start the eng. (Just for a minute or so. Otherwise it's very messy.) See if the oil is pumping up to the top of the eng. and lubing all that should be.

valves tend to tick not squeak. It sounds as though you may have a different problem here to me. If I had to guess I'd say it is either a smog pump or alternator issue. My smog pump made some interesting squeaky noises before I took it off. With all the alts I've had die, they sound like sort of a combo between squeak and grind. Both tend to sound worse at idle than at higher rpms.

You should be able to get the belt off just the smog pump and leave the others on, you could try that and see it that makes any difference. You could get all the belts off and try spinning the alt and the smog pump by hand and listen for noise too. They should be fairly quiet just spun by hand unless something is wrong.

If the squeaking is cam related, its probably one of the lobes or journals starving for oil. I'd do the Rondog check and check for oil pumping to the lobes and bearing journals. The location of the noise should be obvious with the valve cover removed too...

Hopefully you will find an easy explanation for the noise. Poor top end oiling hasn't been a problem in any of the trucks I've had, but you never know.

V-Belts can and due get dirt in them and will squeak at a idle. If so spray a little WD-40 on them and you will know in a instant as they will go silent then will start to squeak again.

Some times you can spray soapy water on them and that will clean them.

Oh and all of this is done while running so be careful.

It's a rubber belt. Why not try an Armor All style product?
