Hello everyone. I posted on this site about a year ago about my 1980 chevy luv (which did not run) that i planned on fixing and using as my first car. Well, long story short,i got very very sick for most of the year and i was not able to do anything on the luv at all. Im healthy now, and this summer i have done some work on it. The Electrical stuff works, the brakes work....a lot of things look good. But the Engine wont turn over. I think either the engine seized, or the starter is dead. Ive looked around and i haven't found too much info on dead starters or getting a new short block or long block. I am not a very experienced car guy, so any information would be appreciated, and excuse anything i say that doesnt make sense or sounds stupid.

Does the starter click or ndo anything? Is the battery any good?

Well, if it's a stick, just roll it a little and pop the clutch and see if the eng. turns.
Or, you could take the starter out and test it on the ground.

I bought a new battery for it.
The truck makes a loud clicking noise when i turn the ignition.
It is stick shift. I would try and roll it, but the tires are rotten and flat. The ground around them is actually higher than it was twenty years ago, ( i found birthday cards for my dads 27th bday in the glovebox, lol ) so i had to dig them out. Where is the starter, and how do i take it out?

Take a Cresent wrench and turn the motor ( tranny in neutrel) by the crankshaft pulley. The starter is on the right side of motor under the carb. good luck w/that if the tires are flat. Put some jack stands under it.

I remembered there was a thread on your LUV previously, so let's link it.

Cool. I wanted those wheels for my '83 Chevy 1/2 ton back in '83! :D

You have a nice truck there. Just pull it out of there, wash it down, and then try working on it. It's much easier on pavement if any is available.

Thank you! Its in very good condition, my dad really really liked it, but he had to stop driving it when i was born, he wanted a "family car" He couldn't bring himself to sell it. Lucky for me, eh?
My grandpa, who knows a lot more about cars than me, has looked it over. He thinks a short block would be a good idea, but i am having a hard time finding a price range, or info about the short block in general. Can anyone help me out with that?

Good deal on a complete engine with extra goodies in this thread, if you can arrange pickup.

If it ran when it was parked and has just sat for many years, try taking all the spark plugs out. Squirt WD40 or the like into the holes and then some eng. oil into the holes. Let it sit for a day or two, then try turning it over with a wrench on the crank pulley. If it will turn over, I bet it will run. 8)
